Money Spent Vs Money Lost

Few weeks ago I just spent over $700 on some gadgets and I didn’t feel bad about it. I didn’t feel like money just left my account I didn’t feel like I lost, even though the gadget I got was just a guilty pleasure buy and I can survive without it. But if I lose $700 any where I will feel like that’s the end of the world. I will feel so sad, bad, angry and disappointed in myself. If I lost it through trading, I will feel so bad that I wish I could go back in time and stop myself from placing that trade. If I clicked a link without reading the instructions properly and end up losing money or spending money I didn’t plan on spending, I start wishing I could go back in time and stop myself.

But let’s look at the angle of spending money, I went out with a friend one time and we ordered some food, I totally thought the food would cost $20 but when the bill came it cost $110. I was shocked but still paid, but I wasn’t angry, I was just disappointed I thought it cost lower. But aside that, I felt like I had a very good experience. One day I was passing by a mall and saw some clothes and shoes, I bought them and spent over $200 buying them. This felt good but remember I didn’t plan on spending $200 just did that randomly, but losing $200 would hurting me so badly.

Now the reason you feel better when you spend money is because of consent and being in control. It’s your money, you are in control, you consented to spending that money. And there is something called retail therapy and our body feels better when we get something for ourselves. But when we lose it, either by trading or it being stolen, at that moment it feels like we didn’t have any control.
