Most of the info below comes from: https://earlycommemorativecoins.com/
"Commemorative coins were first issued by the United States Mint in 1892 to mark the World’s Columbian Exposition. The silver half dollars depicting Christopher Columbus were sold at the expedition for one dollar each. In subsequent years, the US Mint would continue the tradition of issuing gold and silver commemoratives to honor the important people, places, and events of the country.
Early commemorative coins were issued between the years 1892 and 1954 and have included primarily silver half dollars and gold dollars."
I will show the series "Silver Early Commemoratives". It will be presented in alphabetical order.
All coins weight 12.5g, with 90% silver purity.

PCGS graded 2,324 1936-S "Columbia" Half Dollars, with 605 as MS66 and 168 above. 8,007 1936-S "Columbia" were minted in San Francisco.
Today's price is around $265.00.
"The obverse design features the goddess Justice holding a sword and scales. To her left is the State Capitol building of 1786 and to her right is the Capitol of 1936."
Both sides were designed by A. Wolfe Davidson.
"On the reverse is a palmetto tree, a symbol of South Carolina, with an arrangement of thirteen stars around. "

That coin is a commemorative of a significant city and state in the US, it certainly left a lasting legacy of the post-Reconstruction era.
That is the idea behind a commemorative coin: to commemorate significant places, dates or people. Unfortunately some early commemoratives became the way for a few people to earn much money. That was the reason they stopped being minted in 1954.
