I think there's definitely something with the intimacy thing. Most of the kids I deal with regularly are from a variety of backgrounds, and generally (but not always) the older teenagers/young adults that come from houses full of love tend to be more sceptical/cynical of things that are "too good to be true" (even if they would dearly love it to be true) and at least have the ability to research and cross reference things (and most of the time have the self awareness and sense of responsibility to realise that if they stuff up because they didn't, that's entirely on them, though the reality of that may take a while to kick in as they're all still quite young).
I'm a bit worried about the ones that don't and rely entirely on their peer groups and the internet for validation but we do what we can
