Learn about absurdism. A new post.
The guiding principle of absurdism can be summarized as follows:
Acknowledge the absurd, but choose to live meaningfully in spite of it.
To expand on this:
Recognize the absurd: Accept that there is a fundamental conflict between the human desire for meaning and purpose, and the indifferent, meaningless universe.
Reject escape: Don't try to resolve this conflict through suicide (physical escape) or by embracing false hope or meaning (philosophical escape).
Embrace the absurd: Instead of denying or trying to resolve the absurd, fully acknowledge and even embrace it.
Create personal meaning: In the face of cosmic meaninglessness, choose to create your own meaning and purpose.
Live passionately: Engage with life fully and intensely, finding value in experiences and relationships despite their ultimate transience.
Maintain awareness: Always keep in mind the absurd nature of existence, but use this awareness as a source of freedom rather than despair.
Revolt against the absurd: Continue to live and create meaning as an act of defiance against the meaningless universe.
In essence, absurdism advocates for a life lived authentically and intensely, creating personal meaning while maintaining a clear-eyed view of the fundamental absurdity of the human condition. It's about finding joy and purpose in the struggle itself, much like Camus' vision of Sisyphus finding fulfillment in the eternal task of pushing his boulder.
