We decided on New Years Eve that we would start a company in Tokyo. B’s job is draining her and starting to get late on paying her salary. We aren’t sure how much longer she can keep working there and honestly, the shorter the better.
As she was getting ready to look at other jobs, I asked her if anything else was preventing her from starting her own company besides money. She said money is the only thing holding her back, and so I said, let’s make it happen then, screw the new job, let’s work hard to raise the funds this year and start ASAP.
The company will be hers in name (for visa purposes) but I will be able to do some of my work through it and create new income streams. The main focus of the business will be hand-made clothing and yarn products, but we have another aspect or two of the business that will remain a secret for now. It’s a big win for both of us if we can pull it off.
A $40,000 USD investment is required to start a company in Japan as a foreigner as well as some other conditions relating to the type of business.
That’s a very large amount for us who have never seen that much in our bank accounts before. We have a little over 1/3 of that in investments that we are willing to sell, but we’ve gotta come up with another $25,000.
At first we wanted to ask our parents to lend us the money but both families expressed unwillingness.
In all honesty I felt betrayed. I understand that’s a lot of money for them too, but because they all live much more comfortable lives than us, and because both families were willing to sacrifice so much to put us through the system and try and turn us into successful working bee’s it feels like a stab in the back.
They are free to do what they want with their money but they spent years telling me they believed in me and now that I need their belief in me it’s nowhere to be found, unlike when they were willing to sacrifice themselves for years to make sure I went to a top 100 university.
Of course they don’t see it this way. They are just looking out for all of us in their eyes. But they are hesitant to give up control because they trust themselves with the keys to the castle more than me.
This is clear in my mother’s rejection to help me sell a Michael Jordan collectible worth a few thousand dollars and suggesting instead that I sell all of my crypto instead. She has control over the collectible and not my crypto.
I don’t want to talk poorly about them, they are doing the best from their perspective. They can’t see the world like I do, they were born in simpler times.
They grew up in a world that made a lot more sense to them then the world does now and I think it’s causing them to panic. They believed that like is hard and so their life was hard, even when they had abundance.
I don’t want to see the world this way. I will be more optimistic because if I’m not I can’t move reality in that positive direction.
So I don’t take this personally and I hope I haven’t slandered them…but the dichotomy between the insane cost of university and my own personal dreams was really shocking to me and I wanted to include it here because I think many people here could relate to this kind of lack of trust from their parents.
We decided not to let it stop us though. At first we thought about borrowing from friends but later we decided that if we work hard enough we can put together that money in a relatively short period of time.
She’s went from making clothing 3-5 hours a day on her day off to also making hats and scarves 2-3 hours a day after work, sometimes until 1 or 2 am. That’s almost double the output, essentially a second job that’s 20+ hours a week in addition to her 50 hour a week full time job.
I’m helping her manage her social media and revived her Hive account @tentententen where we will share her hats and other products as well as our progress and a Hive related project I am in the process of planning. The overall goal will be to raise money and to raise awareness about Hive and to accept HBD for all our goods and services.
I will help her with international shipping for her summer hats too.
I’ve started doing 30 minute lessons to teach English, Japanese, Mandarin or Guitar, and while 30 minute lessons are a bit more hectic than 30 or 90 minutes, they are more popular.
I focus on hacking the basics so you can get to an intermediate level as soon as possible while building a strong foundation in any of these skills. 30 minute lessons are $15 HBD (a $2.50 discount compared to fiat customers).
I’m working on a Japanese translation of my novels which can sell much easier in Japan than an English version and on printing a CD. This won’t bring in a ton of money but anything helps and it makes it easier to keep people’s interest in shows and events when there is real artistic output.
The goal is for my art and her hats to help each other grow since they are potentially targeting the same crowd. We hope to bring other people into the mix and help them sell their work and become self sustainable once we are up and running.
Please wish us well and if you like what we are doing, share our work, add us on instagram (@ ipluseverything is my music/fiction and @ spotspotspotspotshop is for her hats)
I will let you know a lot more about our plans as they start to come together. I think you’ll be impressed with how well we will bring different things we are doing together and how we use it to enhance hive and the projects of many of our friends. 🔥

Good luck with the new business. It's never easy to build up customers.
I wonder how many people are operating businesses through Hive. The main problem will be a lack of potential customers. We just can't seem to get the numbers up much.
We defiantly don’t plan to get a majority of customers from Hive although a few will be nice!
This is more to share our progress but also because we want our company space to double up as a place for events, some of which we want to use to introduce hive or have meetups. I will lay it all out in the next week or two 😊
Cool stuff. I see so much potential in Hive, but am used to waiting for things to happen.
