Ask me anything about Japan or living in Japan or being a foreigner in Japan.
I’ve lived here for 10 years total. I will keep posting random thoughts about until I see some questions. Ask below!

I thought you're Japanese. 😀
nope! I defiantly don’t look Japanese and I was born in America. I can probably sound Japanese on the phone for a sentence or two
If I am to visit Japan for the first time, where should I start? TIA😊
to be honest, anywhere is ok. I’d go the place that costs the least for flights and hotel. The most fun thing in Japan (at first)is to just see how every little thing is slightly different. The convenience stores, bakeries, arcades, and the food.
That's awesome to hear. Thank you. Affordable flights and accommodation are sure nice. And it makes sense to explore various places, taste their food, and experience their lifestyle even just for a while :)
I know there is more to Japan than Tokyo and Okinawa. In which part of Japan are you?
I’m in Tokyo 🤣 I think it’s important to distinguish but very few people do. The Tokyo experience is very different from the countryside.
Ah, OK. For some reason I had it in my head that you were in Nagoya
Tokyo is like NYC but brighter and more hopeful.
Since you live in Tokyo, I need to ask: Is Nippon Professional Baseball part of your routine? I know the Yomiuri Giants have a big influence on life in the city.
Shohei Ohtani can retire from MLB right now and be voted into the Baseball Hall of Fame as early as 2029. No other player in my lifetime has done what he has, and the only other player to compare with him is Babe Ruth.
What is the best street food in Japan?
What is life like in Japan? Do citizens enjoy freedom?
I was a NY Yankees in MLB but also Giants after Hideki Matsui joined the NYY. I even got to see Ichiro Suzuki play for the NYY. I knew other players would follow Ichiro into the BBHOF; I just didn't think it would be so soon (Ohtani).
I know you would love it more than samosa.. 😂😂😂
https://inleo.io/threads/view/winanda/re-selfhelp4trolls-ps55gazk
Sure, I would love it more. Cabbage pancake looks more delicious and nutritious. But I can try to make a bigger samosa and fill it up with more proteins and veggies and prepare a sweet and sour sauce to go with.
So I will be expecting some cabbage pancakes from you tonight in the party room 😀😜😜
LOL. You need to place your order 48 hours before delivery.
Noted with all curiosity 😉😉
since we are speaking about beer…Japan has a drink called Happoushu. It’s malt with shochu (rice or yam liquor) that tastes pretty much like beer and is cheaper but I don’t like it! It’s a cheap alternative though
Thank you, I didn’t realize how easy this would be. I thought it would be impossible to get any engagement but since I remain in the circle up there as long as the thread is active I guess I can just keep popping in and out until a conversations gets going 😊 I’m dying for shorts.

It often can be tough. But what you are doing is unique so you get some interest.
What a great idea for a threadcast.
I am glad people are taking this a bit more serious.
Imagine when leoshorts is added and videos can be added to this threadcast.
I totally agree! I enjoyed the news threadcast of yesterday as well, though I prefer this one as it has some personal touch on it (and just interests me personally more)
Cool idea! I haven't read back all the messages so sorry if you already answered this but how japanese see foreigners?
WOw!!!
This is a cool Threadcast about know more of Jepan 👍👍, please keep such threadcast rolling 😉😉.
@winanda, do you care for the below? 🐀 Rat 😂😂, please @selfhelp4trolls, I need some frog legs with some cooked pig blood sausage for myself and winanda 😉😉. I want he to eat some Japanese food..
https://inleo.io/threads/view/selfhelp4trolls/re-selfhelp4trolls-2htzcr7r4
Cooked pig blood sausage? What? This doesn't sound good at all. If there is something like that, I wonder how those who consume it look and what it does to them. 🤔
BTW, I've cooked frog meat and used it to make stew, it was delicious.
We can order for it and check it out 😋😋😋😂.
Not me. You can do that and enjoy alone. I think you need it more.
So this is your response to my humble act! Well, it's fine.
👏👏👏.
I need them more and more and more for more!
What a great use-case for threadcasts! I gotta work now, but I'll try to think of something. Japan has always fascinated me deeply. And I've never been
Whats the top sports in Japan. For Nigeria my country, its football.
How would you describe Japanese people? (Knowing everyone is different and such but still, how do they see themselves?)
#freecompliments
What is the most popular national celebration in Japan?
Interesting. I'm beginning to like Japan with the little information I have received from you. Hope to tour Japan someday.

Has Japan good ski resorts? Is it one lone mountain or like the Alps in Europe?
#freecompliments
This is Monkfish liver, looks good, I hope it tastes great too. I doubt I would be willing to try dried rat fins. Lol.
what is the best food pim Japan?
I love miso Katsu, pork cutlet with sweet bean sauce. Or the same sauce on boiled mackerel.
If this is the only thing that can be changed, then I must say it must be a very good country to settle in.
https://inleo.io/threads/view/selfhelp4trolls/re-selfhelp4trolls-2bocbftsj
Wow! It's good to know that one can engage in multiple jobs to meet the standard of living, but the getting drunk aspect is funny.
https://inleo.io/threads/view/selfhelp4trolls/re-selfhelp4trolls-2sgch46vl
Which 1 particular habit should I know when I visit Japan as a tourist?
#freecompliments
there’s a very strong cultural identity in Japan. In the US we had it for sure but it was optional. In Japan 95% of people or more seem to think of themselves as representing the country. I don’t feel I represent USA 🤣
@tokenizedsociety
good question! Many treat us like aliens but try to be respectful. They somehow think we are fundamentally different and it’s difficult to bridge the gap (because many are very stubborn about their preconceptions and habits) but they try anyway.
https://inleo.io/threads/view/tokenizedsociety/re-selfhelp4trolls-xmobyyzm
the big brands, Asahi, Sapporo, Kirin etc. are all decent and all taste the same. I really like Hitachino which is a smaller brand which can only be found in specialty shops but it’s not too expensive.
https://inleo.io/threads/view/stekene/re-selfhelp4trolls-374rnqvkr
Will try the Hitachino if I manage to remember. I usually prefer beers from smaller breweries over beers from the big multinationals. I think I've drunk asahi before, as you say, it tastes the same as others..
#freecompliments
Reading the atmosphere is the most important thing in Japan. Don’t be the loudest person in the room and be patient with people and you’ll be fine
https://inleo.io/threads/view/stekene/re-selfhelp4trolls-2aag73kkm
Guess Japan would suit me in that case! I don't prefer too loud people as well :p
#freecompliments
If you want to try some bar food, I recommend monkfish liver or dried rat fins with mayonnaise 🤣 you can google an image. Great with rice wine
sounds... unappetizing lol
LOL @caleb-marvel I knew you would say something but I wasn't expecting this one. Lol.
You know, you can't tell the taste of food until you eat it, so place an order for the Sunday rice and cabbage pancake, when I receive your payment in thousands of LEO tokens, I will begin the process. LOL
https://inleo.io/threads/view/caleb-marvel/re-selfhelp4trolls-2yjxdb62g
is that all your desire from me?
Yep, easy-peasy.
Japan actually has great Indian food! Some Indian restaurants here use more butter than in India but it’s sooo good with Nan
we will be here waiting for you @mightpossibly
me too xD
LOL. @selfhelp4trolls This is what Monkfish looks like, looks scary.
@selfhelp4trolls People tend not to interact with strangers. So what if a tourist visits for the first time, it means they can't make new friends.
if you aren’t loud and dont do anything too crazy they might talk to you if you talk to them first and they aren’t super busy. It’s hard to do that as a resident though, especially when it fails 70% of the time
Oh! I see. Those who are reserved or comported wouldn't find it difficult to live there. That's nice.
I guess this is the grilled one? Wow!
https://inleo.io/threads/view/selfhelp4trolls/re-selfhelp4trolls-2bqdcpk52
Great idea to organize a threadcast like this btw, it definitely stimulates interaction!
#freecompliments
Thanks in advance for answering the questions! :D

Yeah LeoShorts is really going to add to the potential of something like this.
Japan has very short lived trends with sports too. They love any player who is Japanese and does well overseas. Naomi Osaka, and now there’s a half Japanese baseball player, also the Japanese rugby team in 2017 @magnacarta
@magnacarta I don’t know who said I’m in Nagoya 😆. I have always been. In or near Tokyo except for some short trips
No one said you're in Nagoya; it was faulty memory due to endless scrolling through LeoTheads. After a while, it's all a big blur! I must have seen that detail in another Hiver's thread. My mistake.
my main spots are a few DJ cafes. You can drink coffee or juice and it’s not uncomfortable like in most bars. People aren’t as drunk and it’s more about music and community
speaking of communities in Japan, whether you like skating, knitting, yoga, Dutch, Malaysian (or any language), sports, instruments, vinyl records, etc not to hard to find people with similar hobbies.
I liked this sight because it’s so rare to see a street with so many shops at 9 am with no people there. Usually commuters are rushing to work![](https://images.hive.blog/768x0/https://img.inleo.io/DQmdJcEEq738zf7h5SuTrwm9j1LgRuR2z554aBRBMhZyPVA/IMG_6240.jpeg)
the influence of baseball isn’t all that huge on the city. People who like it talk about it but people around me don’t. People looooooove Otani though @magnacarta
After lunch I enjoyed the view of Shinjuku from the 8th floor of a department store.![](https://images.hive.blog/768x0/https://img.inleo.io/DQmfAQUv35Xrc45VadfwCt7odHmezUFpDzGzBFC8A34rLhS/IMG_6783.jpeg)
legally it’s a very very free country, freer than almost anywhere but socially it’s not free at all. People are expected to give everything to their work and to be busy all the time. If you aren’t busy you are seen as lazy@winanda
Oh! I see. But that doesn't mean there are no social events or parks one can visit, right?
I almost got on a train which would have skipped my station and 15 others passed it bringing me 30 minutes away from home instead of 10 😭
I can relate, I have experienced something similar.
