The other week I caught up with Edward Cartwright, Professor of Economics, about plans we'd had for a Hive meetup at De Montfort University. Originally planned pre-pandemic, there was an opportunity to revive our ideas with a round-table event as part of the Leicester Business Festival in November this year.
We decided to focus on the creative industries as a topic. These make a huge contribution to GDP with the potential to add more; Leicester has an established creative industries infrastructure with the Cultural Quarter, both universities offering creative and performing arts degrees and many interest groups and networks. Plus I had researched and developed a manifesto for writers when I was supporting The Ink Well writing community on Hive.

Here's my first thoughts - feedback welcome:

Join our round table to learn more about blockchains and hear a case study about the opportunities they offer for writers.
The creative industries, which includes publishing and broadcasting, adds £111.7bn each year to the UK economy - greater than the automative, aerospace, life sciences and oil and gas combined. At the same time, the numbers and incomes of writers continue to fall with the median annual income for a professional author at £10,500pa (USD 11,300pa) in 2018, with BME writers faring worse, calling into question the extent to which writers' contribution to the creative industries is properly valued. The round table will explore how blockchains offer new ways for writers to create wealth, new opportunities for writers to interact with their audiences, and new options for investing in writers.
Open to writers and other creatives, publishers and broadcasters, community organisers and facilitators, social investors and small business advisers.

I'd love to hear your ideas and about how we could get the most out of this event for Hive. Let me know, as well, if you are interested in coming and any considerations. We don't have a set date yet but I'm looking at Monday 6 or 13 November.
The event will be two hours long altogether, with the round table taking about an hour and a quarter or so with time afterwards for chatting (the best bit) and hospitality.
De Montfort University has good public transport access.

This is wonderful @shanibeer. I wish I could attend! While it's not an astounding sum, writers can be reliably paid for their writing on Hive. That counts for something!

The draft text reads well - cant think of anything to add. In terms of the topic and discussion, I think its really good. I guess a key aspect would then be about getting that message out to writers, with some kind of guidance of how they can then take part if it interests them - so maybe would need some kind of marketing/awareness programme inc guidance information.

I hope that discussion generates some interest. I see a lot of hostility to blockchain online and I think that is down to a mix of concerns about the environmental impact and all the scams that go on. People need to know that need not always be the case.

people associate "blockchain" with the rug pulls and scams that have so publicly happened the past few years. One big catastrophe wipes out years of good will.
We have a job to do in overcoming that sort of negative attitude to sell the idea of Hive. Any marketing needs to focus on how it is different to a lot of other crypto.
Yes, part of the value of the discussion is about raising awareness about how to take care.
It is good that through you all people will know about this project and they will fulfill their needs by working here.

I believe in the connection that has been built here. I feel that the blockchain is highly undervalued and unoptimized. Probably because even the users (I’m speaking from the Hive standpoint) have no idea what they come here for or even the great tools that this place presents.
I might not know much on the market and the cash flow attributed to the writing industry but when it comes to the blockchain, I really believe that beyond all the “shams and scam” there is a heavy dose of potential. Writers go from here to become authors. Authors come here and build connections and relationships. I have seen it happen.
Apart from the monetary value we have the intangible assets of skills and talents. In fact, with the way the music space is going on Hive, I can safely predict a talent h hunt 😂
I would have loved to attend this meetup. Oh well. I will someday.
