Play to Own - Lies!! How to fix in 2024

in LeoFinance11 months ago

Good day players & fellow Hivians !!

As many of you know we are close to releasing our new "Universal Item" marketplace and system for helping onboard web2 gaming companies using the Unity Game Engine and help them interface with the Hive blockchain natively.

During this I am seeing all this HYPE for games that just give out tokens for you delegating to them so they earn off your HP and you hope the gameplay will be good.
We don't believe in Layer 2 tokens in games. That does not mean we don't believe in in-game currency just not as a Layer 2 token that can be bought / sold outside the game.

At this point you are like, yeah, yeah, yeah, we have heard it all before, but what does this have to do with your title of this post??

Well people are saying GameFi, play-to-earn are back!!! baby!!!
and then others say what makes us different is ownership of your items.
We are more play-to-own not play-to-earn. If you decide to stop playing you still own your items.

Ok... maybe..
BUT
What if the company goes under and shuts down the servers? What do you own?
Well they say you own your items they are recorded on chain.
Really? Lets look at some items "OWNED' on-chain.

In this Image from the days we ran Holybread shows a buy and sell of an item.
Yes we can see who is the new owner but what do they own?????

A bunch of gibberish strings of text.
To quote @taskmaster4450 they own A DB of Nothing!!

Ok you say that is just Holybread. You guys were clueless my Splinterland cards are mine.
Sure... ok.. bud.
lets look at those.

Yeah looks sooo much better.
All games on all chains I have seen do this same thing. You have to cross reference anything on chain with their internal centralized servers.
If they shut down you own NOTHING.

So our new system will be Human-Readable.
We will show the chain transactions soon. Just finishing up some testing but as an example it would be more like.

Loot_Lounge_Sell : simplegame, id: 543038azd3
{name: Fire Sword, power: 3, type: magical}
3.6 HBD

Loot_Lounge_buy : btristen, id: 543038azd3
{name: Fire Sword, power: 3, type: magical}
4.0 HBD

Now you own something and it is called a Fire Sword.
If our game goes under or you want to import into another game.
You have value that the new game can use or give you in game value for it.

We call this new way of looking at digitals items. Value 4 Value gaming and we are writing guidelines for game companies on how to approach this and what value it can bring them to and their games.

So if you believe in this new world we envision.
You can support us by upvoting, following or even tipping us here on Hive or even on X.

You can also find me daily on #inleo #threads.
I also stream on Sunday mornings (MST) if you want to ask live questions.

Also our Unity division is growing and is available for hire if any Hive games need help making 2D or 3D games.

One more big thing. All transactions will be done in HBD on our platform.
Native HBD

Do you know what is the funniest part in it ? They set the narrative that it is free tokens as HP looks free to them. Worst part of it is that there almost 90% gibberish content with fat votes that has nothing related to gameplay and tactics because game does not exist yet.

!PGM !PIZZA !LOL

Exactly.

One of the big token payouts right now for the game I shall not name. Was laughing that they are making $300K per year from all the delegations for their Layer 2.

People that are struggling to get by are giving this "game" $300k/year.
Hoping the game will be good.

Thanks for stopping by.

didn't read the full post but it's ~300k hive per year, the tweet u may be referring to mentioned at $1 hive it'd be $~300k per year.

anyway

thanks for the clarification.

Hope your project goes well.

Our company just doesn't believe in Layer 2 tokens as they violate current SEC rulings and are not needed.
But we do not wish anyone or any project using those no ill will.

Note: My understanding is all Hive-Engine Layer 2 tokens are registered securities.

Actually they are unregistered, that is where the SEC would have the issue.

It depends upon the distribution. If the tokens are sold, then yes, in the eyes of Gensler that is a security. However, it is only the selling. So distribution as rewards is a completely different matter.

Or be outside the United States then you dont have to deal with Gensler.

Agreed.
But I have not seen a layer 2 token that was distributed that has not had any sell activity.
but i get your point.

You can be outside the United States but if any US citizen has access the SEC will come for you.

Which is why a lot of projects do not let US citizens get involved.

It is best to just not have layer 2 tokens in your games. There is no real reason for them from a game play stand point. When you can have an in-game currency that doesn't trigger any of this.

Not a single game designer or web2 company I have spoken to disagrees but if someone has a legit reason. I am open ears.

True. Even EOS didnt allow US citizens to buy during their ICO.

didn't read the full post... interesting.
have a good day

Listened to the Lion's Den episode last night and just finished reading the article. This is all very clear to me now. I mean it was pretty clear before, but now I fully understand where you're coming from. This has been bothering me too for years, without realizing exactly what's been bothering me about it.

Idea: Write a blog post (perhaps on the @darkcloaks account?) where you collect relevant links, like articles like this one, this one and the Lion's Den episode from June1. Then simply update that article as you release new content - basically using it as a linktr.ee. This would make it easier for newcomers to catch up on what this actually is all about.

I love this idea. I will work on this. This weekend

This is great to see! Even many NFTs have similar issues. While not on a central database, they can still "break" between the contract and sometimes images that are externally hosted and referenced. Look forward to seeing what you are building coming into use.

I would state all the NFT's that break are not true NFT's.
Any there is no solution for images only for text.
So if anyone thinks an NFT has a certain image they do not.

The true developers know this but the web3 talking heads do not.

Thanks for stopping by.
