1 oz of gold has its own price. That price fluctuates.
On all the mint coins there is a dollar amount in which you can redeem you metal for said $ amount
But usually these amounts are FAR lower than the market value of the metal.
Unless something drastic happens, where you can redeem dollars for cents of a new fiat currency, I don’t see the price of gold EVER going down to $50
There is this silver 1 oz coin that has a $200 mint value but I never understood why anyone would want that. You’re basically storing $200 worth of fiat into that coin which you could have just bought a bunch of silver coins.

Face value is arbitrary, but gives the “coin” the legitimacy of “legal tender”.
Maybe some collectors also collect by denomination? 🧐
Collectible? So much premium locked for making these coins as a form of currency but then again if currency fails the coin itself still holds value.

The value of the coins should be close to the value of its metal content

The value is still worth $50 in Canadian value, but as you mention on the mint value is $200. Nobody will ever use it to make their grocery during the weekend.

What counts is that it id Legal Tender along with a high commodity value. Gold is the true money.
