It is a tale as old as time.
It is 2022 and someone comes into some money, which in this case is the sale of their house after a two year long bitter divorce battle, and find themselves on the internet. One thing leads to another, and they see an advert on Facebook to make money in crypto promising ludicrous returns, knowing it is likely a scam, and click anyway. Soon after, they have transferred two hundred euros from their bank account with the promise of juicy gains.
However, they have already written the money off as gone.
A few days later, "Frank" calls with an accent and they get talking about the opportunity, how much it has grown in a short time already (about +50€) and how he manages a €75 million portfolio. Still quite clearly feeling this is a scam but wanting to explore further, the conversations moved from phone to Whatsapp. From there, Frank showed some pretty charts and numbers, and how things were progressing, and asking how much more they were willing to invest.
Ten Thousand next.
However, the account had 1650€ worth in it and before investing any more, they wanted to ensure that it was actually withdrawable and would take 1600 out. A couple days later, there it was 1600 in the bank account. After this, they put the 200 back in and continued the conversation for three months, taking bits and pieces out, but not putting anything in, until Frank got annoyed and disappeared. They made over 2000€ in this time.
Bet you weren't expecting that ending.
But, they were lucky, because it was almost guaranteed to be a scam, and had they kept putting money in, they would have lost a lot a very large amount. There are numerous stories of this happening and while this person is about as un-tech savvy as they come, a lot of different people fall for the scam.
I didn't know about any of this until tonight, when they visited me for a coffee and we were talking about trips to Australia and the costs involved. They don't even know I am "in" crypto, and I stayed silently listening through the story thinking how some people are just lucky. Yeah, this person is smarter than the average bear, but once those gains are within reach and feel guaranteed, how many people find it difficult to pull away?
Many.
But, people also think that they are smart at calculating the risks they face, because they see the potential for scam, but justify that they will be able to recognise when things get out of hand. But people want to believe, like the French woman who sent "Brad Pitt" €800,000 to pay for cancer treatment, because Angelina Jolie had left him penniless. All it took was some messages and a few poorly photoshopped pictures.
Anne, I love you.
It is both funny and sad at how gullible people have become in this world. My friend was lucky, because they went in as open-eyed as they could, but it is still pretty crazy that someone would click on a Facebook add and then send hundreds of euros to something that they knew was likely a scam anyway.
Maybe it was legit?
Possibly. But what are the chances..... This is crypto.
Ever been scammed?

Yeah, I had a couple token presales that I spent some money on that I probably shouldn't have. It was nothing significant though. I remember a while ago I had a state detective come and talk to me because he was working on a case that involved a woman getting her money stolen in a crypto scam. I had worked with him on something else and he knew I was pretty well versed in crypto so he wanted to pick my brain. It was sad for the lady, but kind of cool too.
People do many stupid things with money because they are gullible, but also greedy.
And such unfortunately learn from their own mistakes.
How many of them fell for the story of easily earned money, inheritance from abroad from a relative they have never heard of, not to mention phishing emails and payments on fake shopping sites.
People deliberately wicked one another just for their potential gain, we find this kinda stories happening all over here. The lesson is greed when a person is too greed he loss more than he can handle
Oh that would be terrible, wouldn't it? I haven't ever been scammed...yet. I say yet, because the scammers are evolving ever more ways to take your crypto, money, valuables, etc. I am not very tech savvy and feel most comfortable here, on Hive. I have seen many, many people getting scammed by overseas love scams and investment scams too. These people would come in to transfer money month after month, even after being warned. Several people came in to relate to me their sad tale, after sending out tens of thousands of dollars. It's sad that such greedy people exist and also sad that such a gullible people exist...it will most likely never change.
That remember me how they were doing a lot of scams in 2018, and they would run a script, paying everyone the first 3 days and then run with money. I learn how to recognize the guys, they were doing hundreds, maybe thousands of scams and I would go in for 48 hours than get all the profit, I did this for like 50 times, with only one times losing, like 1000$ at a time, with 2-300% profit in 48 hours. The good times with the scam the scammer deal. They always paid first time.
Yes, I have been...
ETH is horrible. I had two failed transactions that added up to nearly $100 usd. The second one I even used mid level gas fee. Still failed.
ETH will never see me use it again.
I posted about being scammed awhile back. You can read it HERE I you want to.
I documented my being scammed as it happened. Screenshots and all. It was surreal. A slow motion nightmare. Like you have said in your posts
about crypto @tarazkp ...
Do not Crypto while TIRED.!!
The story about French woman sending 800k euros is quite something... To believe Brad Pitt would be penniless after divorce can only be beat by her believing that Brad Pitt would actually message her :)
Most scams are pretty good at concealing their nature...
I think people sometimes let their curiosity get the best of them, especially when they’re in a tough spot like your friend was. I’ve heard so many stories about people getting scammed, especially with fake influencers or crypto promises.
Currently there are many scams in crypto and maybe someone is getting away with them and there is some temporary profit due to which those people are including other blind people in it and at the end of the day a huge loss. pushing We have many such incidents happening here, such scams are happening all the time.
Just yesterday, I read that a woman sent a man about $100K to build business innhis country and marry her later, deceived by some sweety words. I think that some people are soft touch, thus they could be deceived easily.
People encountering such things and losing money is completely related to greed. I have never lost money but I have witnessed my friend losing money. I warned him but he did not give up. You were staking DOGE with the promise of high returns. You were earning the money you invested in 3 days. The website he invested in was closed the next day and never opened again.
Your story serves as a reminder that even in the shadiest of situations, there can be unexpected outcomes. Did you ever find out what happened to "Frank," or did he just vanish into thin air?
That Brad Pitt scam came up on my mobile feed this morning! She divorced her wealthy husband as well 🙄
Normally people get scammed for two reasons, greed and desperation. Luckily I've never been scammed before, I think being content with life might help.
