This is an important question that also leads to a host of other questions.
In this video I discuss how it is important to have an understanding of why we are here. This is what drives us. If it is just the money, that isn't going to suffice. That is rarely a driving purpose that is sustained. Usually, people end up frustrated and leave.

I came for Splinterlands. I've slowly been learning more and more about the blockchain. I am lucky that I have some great Hive role models in my Splinterlands guild: @azircon and @tarazkp.
Although I am a music journalist for MoonLvnding (dot com), I find myself struggling to consistently create content here. I've never been an extractor and I don't come here to complain, but I'm also not disciplined enough to create on my own consistently. I think I've found my sweet spot though, interacting with content and commenting on material I find interesting and stimulating.
But I appreciate the mindset of treating Hive like a business. I think with this mindset, I might actually get into a better rhythm of creating content. I've been so preoccupied these last few months in trying to find a new job, that's I've been slipping with the productive time I spend engaging with Hive content. I definitely need to treat this like a business if I want to get more from Hive than a bit of pocket change to invest into more cards for Splinterlands.
Thanks for the reflective video.
P.S. that actor you mention is Danny Trejo. Loved his turn in Tarantino's "From Dusk Til Dawn."
When you talk about the companies not advertising enough, I think back to my Apple days. Back then we did nearly zero advertising. Now that's changed a bit later on, but still not near like their competitors. And yet, we have Apple.
Anyway, it all started on the old chain as a way to earn crypto when I was moving into Vanlife and having to shut down my mines. But then I found the possibility of becoming a big fish in a small pond and that changed everything. It became a personal challenge to become a better content creator, trader, investor, and builder.
I have done more in the past few years than I have in most of my entrepreneurial career. Sure there have been ups and downs, but hey, I am still here! Just wait till I get settled in the new place next month! I know I am pumped.
This video is a must watch video for everyone here
The truth is I have felt frustrated several times and I have never thought about giving up, it has not been a money issue, in fact I have never taken 1 HIVE from the blockchain, my problem lies in not being able to connect with the community in Spanish, my native language , I have tried several times, but my efforts are still in vain, I think I will continue focusing on LeoFlow and later I will try again.
At the age of 56, I can still do 20 push-ups. The struggle is regularity.
As for the reason being on Hive, it was not part of my original intention, but I am glad to have discovered a tree-planting opportunity that after several years, I can pick up some fruits.

Sure, I agree, If it's about money many will already leave and there will be not so many newcomers.
For me, it's the passion to understand and gather knowledge on crypto, building my own profile that differs from regular social media, and my love for writing.
