The Indians are in the American League. The Mets are in the National League.
For most of MLB history there was no interleague play. That means the only time an American League team would play one from the National was in the World Series. The top NL teams still plays the top AL team.
A couple decades ago, they started interleague play meaning the National and American league teams play during the season. This year, they made it where every team places every other team at least one series.
The Mets and Indians have played in the regular season but never met in the World Series.
Perhaps this is the year.
