It seems the direction is going the opposite. The goal is to make the site mobile friendly so it is not dependent upon Apple and Google. Those companies can whack you from their store at anytime.

Probably a good idea but I think they should make apps anyway. I've been using Ecency for a long time and it doesn't seem they have a problem in the app stores. Having apps could draw in more users.
Focusing on a mobile friendly site first makes sense though. Friendly being the key word. It's not there yet.
