The contract is one's own vision. You bring up valid points on so many different levels. We all operated for long stretches of time with uncertainty, at least from the external. Certainty came from our internal belief about what was taking place. Many did not have that and departed, leaving us with the proverbial "this place sucks" posts.
We all paid during the down times. Most witnesses it was an out of pocket expense. For others, it was a time factor. Either way, that was done because of the vision one held (that aligned with many others).
It is easy to look at the rewards now while omitting what took place during the bear. This is what separates those who profit massively versus those who do not. When one has the vision and it materials, great things happen.
You point should be remembered. There were a number of developers working on projects who had to take coding gigs to pay their bills. It was sad to see and a setback to progress but had to be done.
So it is easy to focus upon the gravy-train some are riding when things are good while overlooking the struggle when things are bad.
