I would say the story wass exaggerated. There was work on a digitall coin for decades. A lot had to come together. It wasnt as if #btc was produced in a couple years.

Bitcoin perhaps was robust and decentralized, probably there are qualities the bitcoin network has that wasn't present in those digital coins that existed before bitcoin.
The previous versions had issues with processing. They were too early. Plus Bit-Gold had an issue where the double spent problem was only solved in a centralized way. Szabo couldnt figure out how to do it decentralized.
