There are claims that such numbers were inflated by organised crime for money laundering purposes, but, on the other hand, porn industry (and sex industry in general) was highly lucrative even when illegal.
That is not surprising. It was always a huge money making industry. The VCR set it on steroids.
Look at drugs (illegal) today...that is also a huge business. Legality means little in terms of size.
