A postage stamp is a very convenient and simple technology that allows you to record the payment of postal items. #technology https://img.inleo.io/DQmVE3dt2tmK5G4RM1vv1GQ1Pij3hqtLPtuRiDmQmAUkdmJ/2020-12-07-13-55-27%20(1).jpg

Very true. Something that is overlooked.

We often take for granted technology that is around for a long time, not realizing what went into it and how groundbreaking it was at the time.

Many modern technologies have reached their level thanks to the technologies of the past, for example, due to communication by mail :) !VSC

In a few situations, a postage stamp is as good as cash. It's also good for both historical documentation and for propaganda purposes ("propaganda" in the original sense of the term, not how we know the word today).

That's right, postage stamps have always been one of the technologies of political propaganda !VSC

Apple’s first foldable iPhone could arrive in 2026

Apple continues to work on a foldable iPhone, which could arrive as early as 2026, according to a report from The Information. The phone is rumored to fold horizontally, like the clamshell-style Samsung Galaxy Z Flip.

In February, The Information reported that Apple was in the early stages of developing two folding iPhone prototypes. But now, it seems Apple may have settled on a design, as The Information says the device has an internal nickname, V68, indicating “the idea has moved beyond the conceptual stage” and is now ”in development with suppliers.”

It seems they were working on foldable phones forever.

The funny thing is that I have the same impression. LOL

This was supposed to be a trend in the world a long time ago.

I think at this point there was a great lack of interest in improving this technology.

We are a long way from that. And simply because Trump talks about it, even if he wins, doesnt mean it gets done. That has to be done by Congress.

you're absolutely right on that brother, I'm just hoping that no one screws the country over

LOL the country is so divided culturally, there is little chance of coming back. We do not have any people uniting which means that things, over the next 6 years, will see civil unrest. The only question is how bad it gets.

Hard to say.

Electricity was a pretty big step forward. So was the steam engine. It might pale in being a basic need but the Internet is having the most impact.

Amazon Will Reportedly Start Charging Up To $10 a Month For Premium Alexa AI Features

Amazon is reportedly planning to release a newer, subscription-based version of Alexa with generative artificial intelligence support that will cost as much as $10 a month according to a report form The Verge., This was all first reported by Reuters last May. Alexa will still be free for the basic version you have now, but the newly upgraded version will offer conversational generative AI with a monthly fee.

Now The Wall Street Journal has said its sources think the new version of Alexa with a monthly fee could launch as soon as this month.

#newsonleo #technology #amazon #alexa

Where is all this money coming from? whatever happened to the one off payments to buy things. Now it is just ongoing forever charges. It's the new debt. The cost to live

It is like the eternal car payment. The subscription model is very profitable for busiensses.

Yes but it is getting beyond a joke these days. Everything is moving that way which is causing much of the inflation issues. Regulators focus on the wrong things. Sure we don't need to buy these things which is what they used to say about the internet, but soon we need to.

How are regulators going to fix this?

And keep in mind, people are often their own worst enemy. Take streaming services. Why do people have to have 5 or 6 of them?

Television has actually gotten cheaper in many areas, unless one needs to have access to everything.

Believe me, this is the question I asked my wife as I recently cancelled a few we don't use and didn't know we have. I was about to axe netflix but they have gotten better lately. Also subscription TV is now charging more for ad free and movies. Like wtf is the point of it all lol

The entertainment industry screwed themselves. There are so many free (with ads) apps like Tubi and PlutoTv that are gaining a ton of market share.

We are seeing the fragmentation of video. It is only going to keep expanding and prices models will change. I think that is the door for Web 3.0.

Why Open Source AI Is Good for Developers

When I talk to developers, CEOs, and government officials across the world, I usually hear several themes:

We need to train, fine-tune, and distill our own models.

Every organization has different needs that are best met with models of different sizes that are trained or fine-tuned with their specific data. On-device tasks and classification tasks require small models, while more complicated tasks require larger models. Now you’ll be able to take the most advanced Llama models, continue training them with your own data and then distill them down to a model of your optimal size – without us or anyone else seeing your data.

We need to control our own destiny and not get locked into a closed vendor.

Many organizations don’t want to depend on models they cannot run and control themselves. They don’t want closed model providers to be able to change their model, alter their terms of use, or even stop serving them entirely. They also don’t want to get locked into a single cloud that has exclusive rights to a model. Open source enables a broad ecosystem of companies with compatible toolchains that you can move between easily.

We need to protect our data.

Many organizations handle sensitive data that they need to secure and can’t send to closed models over cloud APIs. Other organizations simply don’t trust the closed model providers with their data. Open source addresses these issues by enabling you to run the models wherever you want. It is well-accepted that open source software tends to be more secure because it is developed more transparently.

We need a model that is efficient and affordable to run.

Developers can run inference on Llama 3.1 405B on their own infra at roughly 50% the cost of using closed models like GPT-4o, for both user-facing and offline inference tasks.

We want to invest in the ecosystem that’s going to be the standard for the long term.

Lots of people see that open source is advancing at a faster rate than closed models, and they want to build their systems on the architecture that will give them the greatest advantage long term.

Very interesting point here:

Third, a key difference between Meta and closed model providers is that selling access to AI models isn’t our business model. That means openly releasing Llama doesn’t undercut our revenue, sustainability, or ability to invest in research like it does for closed providers. (This is one reason several closed providers consistently lobby governments against open source.)

This is for @coyotelation. He wants to travel on something like this.

For trips like Mars where it would take months to get there, cryogenics would be of great help.

Of course, when we have enough technology to explore beyond the solar system, it would be crazy to imagine trips that would last even years while sleeping.

You need a few space hotels along the way.

Hahaha.... To tell the truth I had never thought about that. Without a doubt it would be a great idea hahaha...

It can't be hacked, it can only be destroyed using scissors by cutting the string :) !VSC

Old school.

Only old-timers know how to properly pollinate aponogeton flowers, or cut the tuber at the growth point, nothing new! VSC

Well, I even talked about something similar to you before. I saw somewhere that in less than 5 or 10 years, smart watches will replace smartphones.

I honestly don't know if this will actually happen, but it could be an alternative.

I have a feeling it will be something tied to mixed reality. This will be either some type of glasses or something else we wear. I dont think the watch is the answer.

Glasses can be an alternative too. I was curious to know what companies think about this.

If they are focused in the same way as a foldable smartphone, I think it will take a long time to replace it.

It is hard to know what the replacement will be so it is tough for companies to start building.

This requires an innovator like Steve Jobs was with the iPhone.

The next 5 years should give us an indication. Hell maybe we skip devices and go to chips.

Would you have the courage to use the chip? Or do you also think that the chip will be the "mark of the beast"?

Trump might boost crypto by cutting regulations. Could this lead to a big bull run for Bitcoin and other altcoins? #askleo #cent

Cord Cutting Today 5G Home Internet is Taking Over

Today in Cord Cutting Today for July 23, 2024 we take a look at some of the biggest stories in the world of cord cutting including: 5G Home Internet is Taking Over as Cord Cutting 2.0 Hits Comcast & Spectrum Hard.

From Meta's blog post regarding open source LLMs.

Today we’re taking the next steps towards open source AI becoming the industry standard. We’re releasing Llama 3.1 405B, the first frontier-level open source AI model, as well as new and improved Llama 3.1 70B and 8B models. In addition to having significantly better cost/performance relative to closed models, the fact that the 405B model is open will make it the best choice for fine-tuning and distilling smaller models.

It seems like a lot of people trying the new Meta LLM.

I need to download and at least give it a try since its open source. I've spent plenty time on the proprietary platforms but Im curious about the customization you can do on Llama

It is a big one. The video I watched the one speaking (who tests all these) said he was wondering. What he liked is smaller models would be developed off it.

A lot of options with Llama though.

Indeed. I'll give some feedback when I check it out

It is amazing that Zuckerberg went from being, well, Zuckerberg to the King of open source LLM models.

Tandem drifting Toyotas show how AI might help drivers on slippery roads

Toyota Research Institute (TRI) and Stanford are plugging AI into two Supras that pull off Formula Drift-style tandem driving — but they’re looking for something more important than style points.

In a press release, TRI’s VP of human interactive driving, Avinash Balachandran, says that drifting two cars in tandem autonomously is a “milestone” and has “far-reaching implications for building advanced safety systems” in future passenger vehicles.

Did you see Fast and Furious 3: Tokyo Drift.

This reminded me of that for some reason.

I think this was the last film in this franchise that I watched. I didn't have the patience to watch the others, I don't know... 5 films.

If at the time of the film there had been AI to assist the driver in those races, it would have been something really crazy.

LOL that would take a lot of the fun out of it I imagine.

The 5th one was in Brazil. You might like that one. Good story and about the last one worth seeing.

There are things that I don't know if they show the reality of Brazil hahaha...

For example, foreigners know Rio well, but the real Rio de Janeiro is very dangerous and depending on where you enter a street controlled by a faction, you will be killed.

I've never been and I don't intend to go there. Unfortunately, it's where my team plays here, Flamengo, but I don't see myself going there one day.

I'm honestly not excited about watching the rest of the franchise. I don't think I'll be surprised by much.

Amazon’s paid Alexa is coming to fill a $25 billion hole dug by Echo devices

Amazon’s plan to launch a paid version of Alexa is part of a strategy change to reverse the over $25 billion in losses that its devices business incurred from 2017 to 2021, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal. The AI-supercharged Alexa, which is rumored to cost up to $10 / month, could arrive as soon as this month.

With a potential launch just weeks away, employees reportedly have doubts about whether the new version of Alexa will catch on. A person who worked on the Alexa team told the WSJ that the division is racing toward the deadline to launch the subscription even though “the technology isn’t there.” Amazon’s former head of devices, David Limp, first revealed Amazon’s plans to charge for an improved version of Alexa last year.

All the smart home news, reviews, and gadgets you need to know about

The smart home holds so much promise. It can make life more convenient with lights that turn on as you walk in a room, doors that unlock as you approach, and robots that clean your floors. It can also make your home safer, more energy efficient, and even a little more fun. (Have you tried asking Alexa to beam you up?)

But for all its benefits, the smart home can be complicated, confusing, and occasionally maddening. It’s also hard to keep up with all the changes. New gadgets are arriving daily, new features come to old products, and there are so many different ways to turn on a smart light bulb.

On Friday morning, shortly after midnight in New York, disaster started to unfold around the world. In Australia, shoppers were met with Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) messages at self-checkout aisles. In the UK, Sky News had to suspend its broadcast after servers and PCs started crashing.

In Hong Kong and India, airport check-in desks began to fail. By the time morning rolled around in New York, millions of Windows computers had crashed, and a global tech disaster was underway.

The problems led to major airlines in the US grounding their fleets and workers in Europe across banks, hospitals, and other major institutions unable to log in to their systems. And it quickly became apparent that it was all due to one small file.
