TechCrunch: US cyber agency CISA says malicious hackers are ‘taking advantage’ of CrowdStrike outage

https://techcrunch.com/2024/07/19/us-cyber-agency-cisa-says-malicious-hackers-are-taking-advantage-of-crowdstrike-outage/

Hackers taking care of security features being down?

Imagine that.

And here you go - 15+ replies ;)

Thank you. That is really helpful. Gets the threadcast going strong early.

Yep, I hate that talking to myeself in an early stage of any threadcast I start.

i guess am early today 😁

Yes the threadcast just went up. But it is good to have you here and we already have a few things posted. More will be going up during the day.

BNB chain is here again with its seasonal hackathon. This one is for the 3rd quarter of 2024. The first two hackathons were hugely successful with some great projects built and launched on the BNB chain.

Yep. Exactly as I have been saying. This is happening across the board.

And now for something completely different: Hollywood stars’ estates agree to the use of their voices with AI - CNN.

If you cant beat them, join them.

TechCrunch: Twitch reinstates Trump’s account ahead of the 2024 presidential election

I imagine him streaming some first person shooting games there ;)

LOL that is cold.

I thought he was not cold yet :) By an inch or two ;)

I see you need a bunch of replies to get showcased. Let me have a look at that ;)

The Guardian: ‘Google says I’m a dead physicist’: is the world’s biggest search engine broken?

https://www.theguardian.com/technology/article/2024/jul/20/google-is-the-worlds-biggest-search-engine-broken

Since they added Gemini to it, things seem screwy.

My view is Chatbots are going to crush Google search. They will be built into most sites.

Brave has implemented a search-based AI too, and it kinda sucks.

And Wired again, this time with something frequent flyers like myself find important: Why the Global CrowdStrike Outage Hit Airports So Hard

https://www.wired.com/story/crowdstrike-windows-outage-airport-travel-delays/

The Guardian: AI is overpowering efforts to catch child predators, experts warn

https://www.theguardian.com/technology/article/2024/jul/18/ai-generated-images-child-predators

The interesting thing about #technology is the constant tug-o-war between law enforcement and criminals. Some use it with good intentions, others for nefarious reasons.

And here's a Wired's insight to the topic: How One Bad CrowdStrike Update Crashed the World’s Computers

https://www.wired.com/story/crowdstrike-outage-update-windows/

Here's a way how to get your PC "cured" from the Crowdstrike mess if you haven't done so yet.

Lower electric bill

Prompt: "Analyze my home energy usage data for the past [number] months. My home is a [size] square foot [type of dwelling] in [location]. I have [list major appliances]. Identify patterns of high energy consumption and suggest practical ways to reduce my energy usage and costs. Include estimated savings for each suggestion and prioritize actions based on impact and ease of implementation."

I even need some strategies to reduce consumption.

Luckily over the last two months I've been able to see results and it's cool that we have a "smarter" option to give us more tips on this.

Definitely give this a go then. Interested to hear if you get anything useful out of it

Take the measurements of the house and test it hahaha... I hope it works.

Notice how every attacker these days is tied to Russia.

I guess the US doesnt engage in any cyber-attack tactics.

Oh no! I'm sure we never do. LOL

My Tech discovery today is that I can earn passive income on INLEO, a social media platform without making posts or threads.

That is a way to do it. Keep showing up and you learn more things on here.

Thank you. Growing with that gradually.

Good deal. Keep up the consistency and it will grow.

The platform allows us to do this. Another way to make gains is through interaction like we are doing now.

Yeah , though the passive option is so soothing

Without a doubt, the passive option is really comfortable hahaha...

It is amazing how #technology changes things. Nokia missed out on the entire smartphone switch. They ended up going way down after that.

LOL you do love your flying cars dont you?

The idea is not bad.

Having these cars gives a futuristic idea hahaha...

What is a futuristic idea? Just something you think is futuristic or actually works? LOL

Maybe I didn't express myself correctly or it's the translator's fault.

I wanted to say that having these cars with this type of technology gives us the impression today that it is possible to drive "cars of the future".

They are building some big things these days.

We currently have the technology for this and we should build really big things. But honestly I still never understood how the Egyptians built the pyramids.

There are gigantic blocks that weighed tons. I don't judge anyone who would think the aliens helped. LOL

But seriously, it's annoying to think that these technologies from the past were not "used", because today we would be more advanced, in my humble opinion.

LOL there is certainly more to the story than what we are led to believe. Whether it was aliens or some type of hidden knowledge, who knows?

Who knows right? But it's really crazy to imagine that there were several slaves using gadgets from that time carrying thousands of blocks of that size.

Yeah. Well not sure it all happens like they say when you look at the size (and weight) of some expecially for the Great Pyramid.

I think the same as you. Even because the great war stories were written by the victors hahaha...

Look at this, @taskmaster4450le, a new powerful free tool from Stanford University to build out wiki pages. @leoglossary comes to mind

That is cool I will check it out. Perhaps we have to consider adding more to that. I still wonder the utility these days other than feeding LeoAi.

What are your thoughts?

You may be right regarding utility. I myself have used the pages on several occasions to look stuff up, but without proper search functionality, it's usefulness have been limited. Also, even with leolinker, people doesn't seem particularly interested in using it for their posts.

I'm not sure.. maybe. Maybe it's not worth the hassle, at least at this time.

Perhaps with an even higher level of automation that doesn't require someone to craft each page completely could be something. An AI agent that continuously sifts through pages looking for missing/outdated information and updates the post / posts new stuff for instance? It's not impossible

I played around with it. Does some good stuff. I still wonder the value. What are your thoughts?

Ex-eBay worker who sent bloody pig mask to couple gets slap on wrist in cyberstalking plot

The former senior manager of special operations for eBay’s global security team was sentenced for his role in a cyberstalking campaign.

The former senior manager of special operations for eBay’s global security team was sentenced Thursday in federal court in Boston for his role in a cyberstalking campaign that included sending a preserved fetal pig, a bloody pig Halloween mask and a book on surviving the loss of a spouse to a Massachusetts couple’s home.

Brian Gilbert, 56, of San Jose, Calif., was sentenced by US Senior District Court Judge William Young to time served, one year of supervised release provided that he has no contact with either of the victims, and a $20,000 fine.

Good thing he's a former employee. Now he and the rest of his group know it's not okay to terrorize people like that.

How about posting a few #promptingtips in here each day?

We can start a bit of a library under that tag and, as always, feed #leoai.

i love the idea 💡

i like the thought of that. I think I've used the tag #promptideas previously. Will try to search them

Yeah. I think some simple lessons over time would be helpful. Start a library on here. Get as much stuff in from different chatbots. I will go through some of the different docs that are out there and post some of it in the threadcast.

These startups are trying to prevent another CrowdStrike-like outage, according to VCs

The global outage is a perfect reminder how much of the world relies on technological infrastructure.

Windows users around the globe woke up on Friday morning to “blue screens of death” (BSOD) thanks to a faulty software update from CrowdStrike. The bug caused outages around the world, bringing airlines, boats, hospitals, and banks to a grinding halt. But some see opportunity in the rubble.

US cyber agency CISA says malicious hackers are 'taking advantage' of CrowdStrike outage

CISA confirmed the CrowdStrike outage was not caused by a cyberattack, but urged caution as malicious hackers exploit the situation.

As much of the world slowly gets back online after an outage caused by cybersecurity giant CrowdStrike led to global travel and business gridlock, malicious actors are also trying to exploit the situation for their own gain.

U.S. cybersecurity agency CISA said in a statement Friday that though the CrowdStrike outage was not linked to a cyberattack or malicious activity, it has “observed threat actors taking advantage of this incident for phishing and other malicious activity.”

Use Clear Instructions and Formatting

Structure your prompt with clear instructions and use formatting to separate different parts.

Example:
Analyze the following poem:
[Insert poem here]

Please provide:

  1. A summary of the main theme
  2. Analysis of the poetic devices used
  3. Interpretation of any symbolism
  4. Your opinion on the poem's effectiveness"

Tip: If you want the response in a particular format, state it clearly.

#ai #promptingtips

Be Specific and Detailed

Provide as much relevant information as possible in your prompt.

Example:

  • Vague: "Write a story about a dog."
  • Better: "Write a 500-word story about a loyal Golden Retriever helping its owner, a firefighter, during a rescue mission. The story should be emotional and have a surprising twist at the end."

Chinese submarines with lasers could take down Starlink satellites: PLA study

China could soon be targeting Starlink-like satellites with advanced submarine laser weapons, according to a recent naval study.

According to a study by People’s Liberation Army (PLA) scientists, Chinese submarines equipped with lasers could potentially disable SpaceX’s Starlink satellites if China’s security were threatened.

The study details a submarine with a megawatt-class solid-state laser weapon installed in its midsection, capable of remaining submerged while raising a retractable “optoelectronic mast” to fire at satellites before diving back down, the South China Morning Post reported.

The Chinese are not messing around.

It's incredible how quickly military technology advances.

That is usually either one of the main drivers of #technology or one of the first adopters.

Sad but how to kill people more efficiently is what we seek to do.

He summed up humanity well.

Over the years, what we see is that, much of the evolution was for one society to be superior to another and if the use of force was necessary, they would be ready for it.

The Cold War is a good example of this.

Yep. We are seeing things coming from so many different directions it is hard to picture where this will all end up.

I'm just afraid that, with these leaders today, they won't do anything more absurd than there is already with so much war in the world and that this won't escalate even further.

The future will be very fascinating as it is possible to see so many things being done and developing. A full-scale war would end all of this.

Is it because of their prioritizing their local content?

#cent

At this point, they place a lot of value on what they have. Without having to depend on other countries.

Its technology makes it develop and stand out on the world stage.

@coyotelation

Do you like #technology. Did you always follow it closely.

I really appreciate #technology. Incredible things are being done and the future will be fascinating.

Have you always been interested in it or did you just start to pay attention now that we have the threadcast?

I've always liked it, every now and then I do an article about it, I think my last post was about Neuralink and the implemented chip, but I've been following this project for years.

The last time I was excited about bringing content here was when they created the Stem community, but I don't know why I was "blacklisted" there and never posted on their platform again.

Thanks to your threadcast I can talk more calmly about this. I hope someone else can create a science threadcast as I appreciate it too. Every now and then I bring something here hahaha...

LOL there are a lot of things that we can do with threadcasts. Make them into sections on the site.

Not exactly appetizing but it does address a couple major issues with #space.

Un-pee-lievable new tech could allow astronauts to drink own urine on spacewalks instead of using diapers

The piss-abilities are out of this world.

The piss-abilities are out of this world.

Astronauts may one day not have to relieve themselves in diapers while on spacewalks thanks to groundbreaking technology that will convert their urine into drinkable water within minutes.

For decades, astronauts on spacewalks around the International Space Station have used a disposable diaper inside their spacesuit — known as a maximum absorbency garment (MAG) — when going number one.

Tracking the EV battery factory construction boom across North America

Battery factories are popping up across North America. Here's where they are and how the Inflation Reduction Act influenced the boom.

The onshoring of battery manufacturing for EVs started as a trickle during the COVID-19 pandemic. Then it turned into a tsunami.

In 2019, just two battery factories were operating in the United States with another two under construction. Today there are about 34 battery factories either planned, under construction or operational in the country.

In a first, rare earth metals’ magnetic properties changed using X-ray lasers

Physicists have long held the belief that altering the magnetic properties of rare earth elements is unattainable.

Physicists have long believed that it is impossible to alter the magnetic properties of rare earth elements. However, for the first time, a new study shows that laser pulses have the power to excite electrons that govern the magnetism of rare earth materials.

These findings can lead to the development of better, faster, and more energy-efficient data storage devices in the future.

The study authors achieved this feat using two powerful X-ray lasers, EuXFEL (European X-ray Free-Electron Laser) and FLASH (Free-Electron Laser in Hamburg). Both lasers are located in Hamburg, Germany, and are capable of producing ultrashort X-ray pulses.
