I would focus upon the economics of sports if you could. I think that is unique and could be interesting learning. You could write about salaries, profits, and sports as a biz.

That is true. But how many people will be interested in Canadian economics and what kind of following will you have? Also, how many others are out there writing about it on the web? You also want to choose something where you stand out.
Canadian economics in general follows the global pattern and may have insights for users outside of Canada. That's a good point though.
And how many really care about global economic patterns. They would rather read about whatever their ideology is regardless of how disproven it is.
