Major corporations have somewhat “captured” the AGI research scene. They have systematically directed AGI R&D toward technical approaches that require large centralized server farms and huge datasets—i.e. toward approaches in whose pursuit they have built-in advantages over the competition.
Decentralization seems likely to be of broad benefit. It will most likely be to humanity’s benefit if the first HLAGIs are developed and rolled out in a manner that is not heavily controlled by any small set of individuals or organizations (i.e., in a relatively decentralized manner).
