Origins and Purpose
The Wallenberg Foundations trace their roots to the family’s long-standing tradition of philanthropy, formalized in the early 20th century. The first foundation, the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation (KAW), was established in 1917 by Knut Agathon Wallenberg and his wife Alice, with an initial donation of shares worth SEK 20 million (equivalent to over SEK 600 million, or about $58 million USD, in today’s terms). The family’s philosophy—reflected in their motto “Esse, non Videri” ("To be, rather than to seem")—emphasizes discreet but impactful contributions to society, particularly in advancing scientific research, education, and innovation in Sweden.
