In its early years, PostFinance focused on basic payment services. A significant milestone came with the introduction of the inpayment slip with a reference number (VISR) during the 1930s economic crisis, a pioneering innovation that revolutionized paper-based payments in Switzerland. This system, later renamed ISR in 1996, solidified PostFinance’s role in the country’s payment infrastructure. However, the economic challenges of the time also led to very low interest rates—by 1949, interest on postal cheque balances had dropped to just 0.2%, prompting its discontinuation due to the minimal benefit and administrative burden.
