Nat Turner was born into slavery in Southampton County, Virginia, on October 2, 1800. While little is known about his family, he was raised on the plantation of Benjamin Turner, under whom he was permitted to learn reading, writing, and religious practices. His mother, Nancy, played a significant role in his early life, instilling in him the belief that he was destined for a great purpose, possibly as a spiritual leader. Despite the harsh realities of enslavement, these formative relationships helped shape Turner’s religious fervor and fueled his vision for emancipation.
