In four years of being here I rarely ever voted comments. Every hard fork made voting comments less attractive. First there was the 30 minute window where early votes would sacrifice curation rewards. This wasn't as bad as the later hard forks as at this point the sacrificed rewards would go to the author you voted, not so bad.
This window was later reduced to 15 minutes which was an improvement to voting comments but sacrificed rewards would go back to the reward pool, so neither the author or the voter would receive them. This change meant you would have to wait 15 minutes to vote on a comment to avoid sacrificing a good portion of your influence.
Down the road the window was reduced to 5 minutes. This was reasonable with the content we have, but a curve was added to heavily penalize small votes. This curve hit comments the hardest, rightly so as they were the most heavily abused by farmers. The curve would penalize small votes as much as 40%+ reduction in vote value and ultimately curation rewards. This discouraged authors from voting on comments of their content unless they can make it over the curve with larger $1-$2 votes.
Hard Fork 25 changed a few things that made voting engagement on your content more attractive. Hard Fork 25 removed the curve completely and removed the 5 minute reverse auction window. This means if you get a discord notification of a new comment and open, read, and vote to it in under 5 minutes, something that is very common with Gina Bot and F.R.I.D.A.Y., you will be able to give your full vote value and receive full curation rewards. Not only that you don't have to worry about vote snipers that know you are going to vote comments on your post.
I believe people who engage on your content are the most important users to you in the community. I think rewarding comments goes a long way to make them feel appreciated.
While I fully support these changes, they do mean we have to be more vigilant about abuse. It is a lot easier to hide 10 $0.50 self votes on comments a day than it is to hide a $5 vote on a shit post.

When one's upvote value is less than $0.02, comment upvotes are usually washed away as dust. One needs to have about $600 in HIVE POWER before their comment upvotes get paid.
I sometimes go through the comments of accounts I want to support and add an upvote to sweep their dust.
Users can employ @dustsweeper with the OUT option. Whenever outbound upvotes are worth less than $0.02, dustsweeper will give an upvotes sufficient to bring the vote value above the dust threshold.
It is good to use alt coins like !WINE to encourage engagement

It is unfortunate the amount of Hive required for a 2 cent vote. As more and more Hive is earned and powered up, this threshold gets harder to obtain unless the price goes up with it.
I like to point new users to @penguinpablo 's Upvote Calculator. It said that an account with 750 HP has an upvote worth $0.02 . It showed the HIVE price was $0.48 and Reward balance was 806,223 when I visited.
That would cost $380.
My general rule is that one shouldn't upvote comments until one has enough HP to assure the vote will get paid out.

Yeah. I didn't realize there were penalties to voting comments. It made people happy though so I kept doing it when it is worthwhile.
Abuse can only be as big as the abuser's hive power. What percentage of hive power is owned by small abusers? Imo it doesn't matter to focus on this, just the big fish.
If abusers get too big, they are caught extremely quickly. I remember because I remember vote farming on steem when I didn't know it was considered a bad practice. 10k+ hive power accounts can't farm without being downvoted.
The problem is actually finding it and countering it. It's a lot of work requiring unpaid labor seeing as the majority of the community will not bother.

Hard Fork 25 changes have certainly contributed to the increase in engagement and this is good for hive overall. I have noticed the increase in engagement and I expect that more people spend time reading posts and leaving their words in the comment section.
Do you consider that there was an increase in engagement after HF-25?
This is the benchmark for me for voting comments on my posts. The fact that they came around and ought to be appreciated.
Someone did mentioned the rewards of voting comments going back to the pool.... It completely discouraged me from voting those thoughtful comments
It's a good thing the hardfork 25 made it possible to appreciate my followers who appreciate me and my writings through their comments
Voting comments does help a lot with engagement, for sure. I think that it's also helpful for new users to grow on the platform. Its not easy to grow organically on the platform when you first start out, especially if you are only relying on rewards from a post. Just my opinion here but a person should only post once per day or maybe twice if you really have a lot to say so growing by posting alone is severely limited. Commenting on the other hand, a person can make as many of those as they like, provided they aren't spammy and pass people off lol. Votes on comments are kind of like a faucet effect for new users. Small trickles here and there really add up over time and help with organic growth. The incentive to comment also builds relationships over time as well which also leads to growth. Overall, voting for comments is a good thing in my opinion

I think comments being "neglected" for so long by people not upvoting them due to financial reasons hurt the platform a lot long term. When I first considered making an account on steem I remember the fact that comments getting some nice upvotes convinced me to give the platform a try. Otherwise it's daunting to start writing long post when you haven't done it before. Besides people like to socialize in the comment section and getting rewarded for that is awesome
I totally agree with you, being rewarded for commenting stimulates a lot, either by the author of the post, or by some comment curation project. This is the case of this account that goes on the hunt for valuable comments on Hive, looking for users committed to this hive. What do you think of returning some gaming aspect to the first 24hrs with payout in 5 days while making days 2 through 7 linear?
I'd also like to see the return of the 30 day payout window, too, if it doesn't up api node memory costs.
We had that at one point, might have been before you got here, but those extra pennies did add up.
I think any gamification in the first 24 hours will be heavily gamed by bots. I think giving everyone a fair opportunity in the first 24 hours allows for more organic voting and less dependency on maximizing actions. So at this time, I wouldn't be a fan of changing it for those reasons.
I am a fan of evergreen content, Hive by nature doesn't tend to lend itself to it as you can only vote once and most of the voting is done in the first 48 hours. If we were to compete with Twitch, YouTube, and other long term content platforms, we would need an evergreen solution. We do have it in one form, tipping, which isn't' used much though. There have been some talks in the past of evergreen solutions most of which though were pretty hacky. I would probably be more in favor of 5 day payout than 30 mainly for the reason most votes come in within 48 hours and latest version are more likely to be farming.

I'm thinking there is some way to game curation with some random that will baffle bots.
Add order of vote, weight, and time between votes that randomizes rewards to curators on the first day.
It won't be straight linear(boring, no bump to vote value on popular content), but it won't be predictable, more a lottery.
Some days you get the boost, other days you get, maybe, 95% of what linear would have given you.
As for abusive stake, if a btc node was counterfeiting btc, nobody would bat an eye at excluding them.
Why counterfeiting hive with low effort content isn't viewed the same is beyond me.
After all, pob can also be described as proof of effort mining.

Something I really like to do is just sort posts by recent and see the lowbie accounts posting stuff, and comment on them. I like to make people feel welcome with good quality content posted to the blockchain.

from the time i was able to jump over the dust vote with 20% vote i was voting comments on my post.
i don't get that much comments and my stake is not that big so the hit on curation rewards was not that important for me.
Since the last fork, I started to upvote original/engaging comments on my giveaways and I hope I reward even further my engaging community with those votes.

I enjoy curating comments too. I am fascinated by rewarding engagement on Hive.
It's quite interesting what I just read in this post and in the comments. I'm learning several things I didn't know, despite being a comment curation project.
I have several questions to ask you, I don't know if it's possible to help me through here or Discord. My desire is to reward the best I can to users and encourage them to comment interact. We have a trail and some have delegated HP to this account in order to better value the comments.
