Port: The First RWA Exchange-Traded Pool

Source

In my latest article, I talked about Ondo Finance and their L1 solution for RWA tokenization, Ondo Chain. Today, I stumbled upon yet another development in the RWA sector, which backs up my theory that this will be one of the big narratives in the coming year.

RWA is a trillion-dollar industry that can bring a lot of capital to the crypto universe but due to some particular challenges that it presents, it hasn't been fully integrated yet.

Many projects are trying to do that such as Chainlink, Ondo Chain, which we just talked about and I just found out about a new contender: Ozean Finance.

Ozean, which was launched by Clearpool is a blockchain that claims to be the home of Real-World Assets. They already have a few products related to RWA tokenization and they just announced Port, a new type of liquidity pool.

Port Overview

Port is being dubbed as the first RWA exchange-traded pool. The idea behind it is to enhance liquidity, accessibility and diversification for yield-bearing RWA.

In Ozean's view, the existing RWA products do not address typical challenges such as illiquidity, long lock-up periods, restricted access, and difficulties in risk assessment.

To address these issues, Port is designed to pool illiquid RWAs with liquid, yield-bearing instruments such as U.S. T-bills. Port is an Exchange-Traded Pool (ETP), meaning it is a liquidity pool that functions similarly to Exhange-Traded Funds (ETFs), but on the DeFi ecosystem.

One of the key differences of Port when compared to other traditional financial products is the governance system. Port has a decentralized governance system where holders of the CPOOL token (the native token of the Ozean blockchain) vote on asset composition and weighting.

Another concern of RWA investors that Port seeks to address is risk assessment and management. To address that, Port established partnerships with licensed custodian Hex Trust and also has third-party risk assessments conducted in real-time by Synnax and the Credora Network, providing continuous monitoring and rating of yield-bearing assets and reinforcing the integrity of the vault.

Port also enables permissionless access, allowing all kinds of investors to participate in the protocol, not only accredited investors, as is commonly the case with Real-World Assets.

Next steps

Ozean has not announced the launch date for Port yet, only mentioning it should be coming out soon. For the moment, it seems one way to get involved is by getting the CPOOL token if you want to take part in on-chain governance.

As RWA is a subject that interests me, I'll be keeping an eye on this and may write a new article when Port does come out.

Final thoughts

Ozean Chain and Port are new additions to the RWA-DeFi ecosystem. I believe we will see many more coming up in the next few months.

RWA is a trillion-dollar asset class with massive potential for tokenization and, because of the many challenges present in trying to bring this asset to the blockchain, the rewards for those who manage to do that can be huge.

As an enthusiast of the tokenization of all kinds of assets, I hope they succeed.
