Ok, this is one of the craziest piece of trivia I have learned about for some time now!
So in a few places in Ghana lie settlements known as “witch camps,” where women accused of witchcraft seek refuge from societal persecution. Yes, I used present tense. And yes I said witches. That is happening in 2025, not like 500 years ago.
These camps house hundreds of women that have been accused of witchcraft. Some are just mentally ill, some are widows falsely accused by relatives who wish to seize their late husbands' possessions etv
In 2012, the Ghanaian government had promised to close the witch camps after educating the public that witches do not exist.. But in 2020 there were at least 4 camps at Gambaga, Kukuo, Gnani and Kpantiga housing over 500 people. So yeah, not much success in convincing the public 😅
Of course life in these camps is nothing close to ideal. The women right typically live in extreme poverty and offer farming services to local chief lords or just get by with whatever external aid they can get. Yes, there is some protection from mob violence but the camps perpetuate the stigma and in most cases the women never return to society.
Here's a video of some guy visiting two such camps a couple years ago
It's just so sad to see silly superstitions running so strong even today.
Absolutely insane. 😧

It's like a leper camp.
The wheel turns. On one of those days when we think luck has turned on us, we need to remember stuff like this happens all over the world.

At least the leper camps made sense due to the infectious nature of the disease 😅

It's pretty surreal to see/think about that there are humans on this planet living such lives, still in 2025. Meanwhile we are out here blogging on Web3 earning ourselves digital money coins.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
True that 😂

It happens everywhere, even in rich countries. Just replace superstition with conspiracy theories. People will believe anything.

I don't see any flat Earth camps though 🤣🤣🤣
That's crazy. People are way too superstitious over there it sounds like, I know a lady who is a witch, and proud of it! Too bad that those poor women are banished to witch camps!

yea that's nothing new for me, i knew that in africa they strongly belive in magic and rituals and such... albine people are also at death risk there
Sad to see that there are still such no sense beliefs in 2025, when we talk about AI integration into our life.
That’s pretty nuts. But they have a very hard belief in witchcraft there.
This is so sad and nobody fight for this poor women, not even their children or family members... Africans believe a lot in witchcraft and that's a set back for most. Even in my country Nigeria people have strong beliefs in witchcraft but we don't have witch camps.
@Trumpman,this is a truly eye-opening and disturbing post.Learning about the existence of witch camps in Ghana in 2025 is shocking and highlights the persistence of harmful superstitions and societal injustices. The fact that these camps continue to operate despite government efforts to close them underscores the deep-rooted nature of the problem.Your post effectively conveys the plight of the women residing in these camps, highlighting their poverty, the stigma they face, and the lack of successful integration back into society. The video link is a valuable addition, offering a visual perspective on the reality of these camps.Thank you for bringing attention to this important issue. It's a stark reminder that even in modern times, deeply ingrained beliefs can lead to devastating consequences for vulnerable populations.

It's a very weird thing to see. I don't see why they believe in these superstitions. It just doesn't seem logical.
