Data4 Breaks Ground on New Data Center for Tech and AI Expansion
DATA4 Group, a leading European data center operator, has announced its strategic expansion into Greece to enhance European digital infrastructure and support the continent's digital transformation.
On November 19, a groundbreaking ceremony marked the commencement of construction for two new data centers by the French firm Data4, situated in Paiania, East Attica just outside the capital city, Athens. Spanning a substantial area, the facility is designed to meet the increasing demand for data storage and processing capabilities, driven by the rapid adoption of cloud services, big data analytics, and the Internet of Things (IoT). DATA4 Group announced the development through its LinkedIn handle.
We’re excited to announce that today, Data4 Group laid the first stone of its brand-new data center campus in Paiania, East Attica, #Greece. This marks a significant milestone in our European expansion, and we were honored to have Greece’s Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, along with several distinguished guests, join us for this special occasion. The groundbreaking event was attended by Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, alongside other government officials and executives from Data4. The new data centers position Greece as a pivotal hub for technology and artificial intelligence (AI) in the Mediterranean region.
The project represents an initial investment of €300 million, possibly increasing to €500 million with additional development if a third data center is constructed, contingent upon successful collaboration with the local community. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis emphasized the initiative's role in digital transformation and economic growth. Data4 joins other tech giants like Microsoft, which has invested in AI data centers in Greece and Spain, pitching the region’s growing importance in the global tech landscape.
In his address, Prime Minister Mitsotakis emphasized the investment's potential to bolster the local economy, enhance Greece's international standing, and generate opportunities for skilled technical professionals. He stated,
"The government is committed to supporting projects that drive digital transformation and foster innovation."
The new Data Center will provide enterprises with reliable and scalable solutions, facilitating their digital operations and fostering innovation. In line with DATA4's commitment to sustainability, the Athens data center campus will incorporate advanced energy-efficient technologies and renewable energy sources. This approach is in tune with the company's broader environmental objectives and supports Greece's national goals for reducing carbon emissions and promoting green energy initiatives.
The Athens campus's strategic location offers low-latency connectivity to key markets in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. This positions DATA4 as a central player in the region's digital ecosystem, enabling businesses to deliver faster and more reliable customer services.

Olivier Micheli, CEO of Data4, outlined the project's timeline, indicating that the first data center is expected to be operational by the end of 2026 or early 2027. The initiation of the second facility will depend on market demand and the pace of technological adoption in Greece. Micheli remarked:
"The plan is by the end of 2026, [or] January 2027, the first data center will be ready."
When comparing the Greek market to other European countries where Data4 operates, Micheli noted similarities, particularly in the demand from national firms for data hosting services. He highlighted the proactive stance of the Greek government in promoting digital transformation, stating,
"The government [here] is very active, [it] has a program transition to the cloud and digital to facilitate the lives of the citizens. The government is already a big consumer. As well, you have all the tech giants that are willing to support AI and cloud development in the country."
This development follows Data4's announcement in September of its investment intentions in Greece. Data4's initiative is an addition to the trend of data center investments across Europe. The company currently manages several data centers in six European countries and has set a 7 billion euro investment target for expansion by 2030.
These strategic investments reflect a concerted effort to enhance digital infrastructure and enhance innovation to position Greece as a competitive player in the growing ecosystem of technology and artificial intelligence.
