KEY FACT: PayPal’s stablecoin,
PayPal USD (PYUSD) partners with LayerZero to expand its cross-blockchain functionality to facilitate transfers between Ethereum and Solana. This integration allows users holding PYUSD to easily transfer their tokens across these networks without relying on traditional payment platforms. Initially launched on Solana in May, PYUSD has seen significant movement, particularly on Ethereum. Despite market growth, PYUSD remains smaller than major stablecoins like Tether (USDT) and USDC.

PayPal USD Partners with LayerZero to expand Cross-blockchain Transfers between Ethereum and Solana
Financial giant and FinTech firm, PayPal has partnered with LayerZero Labs to expand the utility of its stablecoin, PayPal USD (PYUSD) by enabling cross-chain transactions between Ethereum and Solana. This collaboration allows users to seamlessly move PYUSD across these two major blockchain networks, which are foundational to decentralized finance (DeFi).
LayerZero, the leading interoperability protocol, today announced that PayPal USD (PYUSD) now utilizes LayerZero’s Omnichain Fungible Token (OFT) Standard to enable transfers between Ethereum and Solana. - Source
The integration is to eliminate liquidity fragmentation and ensure fast, secure and cost-effective transactions for both users and businesses. This is one of PayPal's commitment to integrate traditional and digital financial systems while aligning with the growing DeFi trend that emphasizes interoperability and assets access on multiple blockchains.
The LayerZero partnership marks a strategic decision to meet the demand for cross-chain stablecoin use, hencee, allowing PYUSD holders to interact more broadly within the blockchain space. Initially available solely on Ethereum, PYUSD has gained popularity among PayPal’s vast user base, yet the limited availability hindered its use within ecosystems like Solana.
LayerZero’s technology provides a seamless bridging solution that allows PYUSD holders to move assets across Ethereum and Solana without intermediary steps or reliance on centralized exchanges. LayerZero thus facilitates direct transfers as well as improves transaction efficiency and security which is a crucial feature given the frequency of cross-chain exploits and hacks in recent years. Therefore, PayPal adopting LayerZero's bridge establishes a trusted pathway that can potentially encourage other financial players to explore decentralized bridging solutions.
As PYUSD goes live on both Ethereum and Solana, this integration unlocks a multitude of use cases. For example, Solana, known for its low-cost, high-speed transactions, offers an ideal platform for smaller or high-frequency transfers of PYUSD. On Ethereum, however, PYUSD finds potential use in established DeFi platforms where high liquidity is often essential for decentralized lending and borrowing.
This access to two distinct ecosystems enables PYUSD holders to leverage unique features across both chains. They can participate in Solana's speed-oriented apps or Ethereum’s larger, mature DeFi environment, which boasts extensive applications and liquidity pools. This flexibility and cross-chain functionality reflect the changing financial landscape, where users increasingly demand adaptable digital assets.
While PYUSD has experienced rapid adoption, it remains smaller in market cap compared to other leading stablecoins such as Tether (USDT) and USD Coin (USDC). PYUSD’s cross-chain capability could help close this gap, as stablecoins that can navigate multiple blockchain ecosystems are generally viewed as more versatile by both investors and institutions. This partnership also pressures other stablecoin issuers to consider similar expansions to retain competitiveness.
Speaking on thr partnership, Bryan Pellegrino, CEO of LayerZero Labs emphasizes the benefit of interoperability for stablecoin PYUSD. He added:
“By using LayerZero, PYUSD can move seamlessly between Ethereum and Solana — helping holders move their tokens between chains to use how they want and when they need to.”
On this part, Jose Fernandez da Ponte, Senior Vice President of Blockchain, Cryptocurrency, and Digital Currencies at PayPal expreses hope PYUSD holders will welcome the flexibility and convenience offered by LayerZero through the partnership.
