This course's primary objective is to provide lawmakers with a comprehensive understanding of blockchain technology and the broader Web3 ecosystem. It aims to equip them with the necessary insights to make informed decisions in the rapidly evolving tech landscape. A notable delegation of UK Members of Parliament (MPs) from various major political parties will attend this inaugural session. Leading the delegation is Lisa Cameron, the founder of the UKUS Crypto Alliance and a former MP who served from 2015 to 2024. Cameron emphasized the significance of this educational endeavor, stating,
"Given the prominent role that blockchain technology is poised to play in the UK’s tech sector, it is essential that policymakers are equipped with the knowledge to make informed decisions."
She further highlighted that the Polkadot Blockchain Academy's course offers MPs a unique opportunity to gain firsthand insights into the practical applications of Web3 technologies.
This educational initiative is in response to the UK's recent proactive measures in the cryptocurrency sector. On January 10, 2025, the UK Treasury amended existing financial legislation to clarify that crypto staking does not fall under the category of collective investment schemes, which are subject to stringent regulations in the country. This amendment signifies the Treasury's commitment, made in November 2024, to develop a comprehensive cryptocurrency regulatory framework by early 2025.
Chrissy Hill, the Chief Legal Officer and interim Chief Operating Officer at Parity Technologies emphasized the importance of educating regulators for the sustainable growth of the crypto industry. Hill, who will also be attending the course, remarked thus:
"Policymakers play a crucial role in shaping the future of blockchain, yet have empirically lacked access to structured education on its technical and regulatory foundations."
She added that the Polkadot Blockchain Academy is dedicated to bridging this educational gap, ensuring that decision-makers are well-equipped to formulate policies that foster innovation while maintaining necessary safeguards.
The "Blockchain Basics for Policymakers" course represents the inaugural session in Polkadot's global educational initiative. The Academy plans to extend similar programs to other key jurisdictions, aiming to foster a well-informed global regulatory environment that supports the growth and integration of blockchain technologies.
