2020: Welcoming Hive and leaving Steemit
In 2020, when the Hive blockchain was created from a fork of the Steem blockchain, I immediately started to blog on Hive. For less than two months, I posted on both blockchains, then I stopped posting on Steemit.
At the end of the year, I powered down all my Steem Powers and sold all my Steems. With the result, I bought Hives and powered them up. As the prices of Steem and Hive were almost the same, I doubled my Hive Powers (from 175K to 350K).
Mt. Gox Ten Years Later
In 2017, my wife sold her house in Burnaby and we moved to a rental apartment. Then, in 2018, as I said before, I bought my Crypto-Condo.
At the same time, I stopped working for Adacore, the company I worked for. I was 60 years old, so it was time to do something else.
For several years, the new owners of the house in Burnaby received mail for us, mostly for me. They would send an email to my wife and I would go to the house and collect the mail. This happened until the end of 2020.
Suddenly, in 2023, they sent us a new email indicating that they had received a large envelope, addressed to me, from Japan. They told us that they were ready to toss it into the garbage can, but as it was coming from Japan, they thought it could be important.
You bet it was important!
The letter from Japan had been sent by the lawyers taking care of the bankruptcy of Mt. Gox.
They had tried to contact me through my Adacore email, but I was no longer able to use it. Sending this letter to the address I had registered was he last attempt to contact me.
Because both the registered email and address had changed, it took men more than a month to change them and be recognized as a legitimate user of Mt. Gox.
Finally, I was told that I would get a little more than 4 Bitcoins. And in 2024, I effectively received the 4 Bitcoins in my Kraken account.
As I said before, I had given up on Mt. Gox, so I was both surprised and happy to get something 10 years after the bankruptcy.

That was a good result in the end. It can be helpful to have a email address that is likely to persist. I bought my own domain some years ago that should last plus I have Gmail as a backup. Google have shut down other services, but I'd hope they will keep that one. I do actually pay them something for storage.
At some point in the Hive fork my Steemit account got censored for criticising them. I was still able to get all my funds out and convert to $HIVE, so I did well from that. I just hope it will recover some of the former value.
I think everyone who has dabbled in crypto will have some stories to tell. I've invested some funds, but have not lost anything substantial yet.
I have a Gmail account too.
Why don't you tell your crypto story?
It would mostly be about joining this chain. I don't think I bought any crypto before that. I just played with some faucets, but those never pay much. I'm sure I posted about the fun of the fork.
I don't even know where to start. So many lessons!
Your testimony (the three posts) basically shows a mix of good financial (and life!) decisions, bad luck, learning from mistakes and never quitting.
Thank you for sharing this educational and inspiring set of events.
You are welcome.
It's good to hear that after 10 years you got something back because after that long all hope is lost so this exchange has been faithful to its people and at the price of bitcoin then and you There is a lot of difference in price and even if you compare it, you have got more money than that so it is a good thing and in the same way when the exchange gives something back, people are again on top of it. Trust us, we hope you will be happy and the way you have given bitcoins to your children will also be very happy because the future belongs to Bitcoin and through it the world.
Digital currency is going to gain a lot of importance in the coming time and now we are seeing a bull run next year.
Oh wow, you only got 4 BTC back. I thought it would be more than that, but I guess it is definitely better than nothing. I wasn't really following the Mt. Gox updates, so a lot of users were screwed too. I thought at least half was recovered.
You didn't get all the bitcoins you lost, but 4 bitcoins are probably worth more now than 100 bitcoins were in 2014.
Yes, indeed, BUT...
104 Bitcoins were worth US$2M at the end of 2017.
I am sure that I would have sold many Bitcoins then.
Wow. That's really great. Congrats, Vincent.
I read that moves were being made to give people back their stuff from the Mt Gox hack, but this is the first time I'm confirming that someone actually received something.
As you fully transitioned from Steemit to Hive, doubling your Hive Power by selling off my Steem, and in a surprising twist, after 10 years, recovering 4 Bitcoins from the Mt. Gox bankruptcy.... it is like I've mirrored you. Maybe not at the same stake, but surely I've been through same experiences.
Mt. Gox was a tragic incident but now they are paying back so its good. Glad that you got 4 BTC.. its a big amount
Greetings @vcelier ,
What an amazing story....after all these years.
Very happy for you and your family. ^__^
Cheers, Bleujay
I can't believe that after all this time, you finally received something from Mt. Gox. It's amazing how sometimes, the most unexpected things can happen. I'm glad you were able to get back some of what you lost.
Better than nothing. Didn't know such things are possible. Looks like almost the happy-end of your The Mt. Gox story.
Holy Moses! 4 Bitcoins is a whole lot of money and more than enough to push bankruptcy into the background.
Congratulations!
Something is better than nothing :-) after waiting for a long time, you finally received good news. wish you best of luck.
4 bitcoins was much less than your balance. Better to have something than nothing. Thank you for selling steem and buying Hive .
Mt. Gox actually came through ... this is good news for all the people who were affected!
Menos mal que leiste el sobre, es una historia muy interesante, mucha salud es mi deseo
