George Orwell, born Eric Arthur Blair in 1903, remains one of the most influential writers of the 20th century. Known for his fierce criticism of authoritarian regimes, his works continue to serve as a mirror to society, reflecting our struggles with power, control, and truth. Through Animal Farm and 1984, Orwell’s insights have transcended generations, making him a timeless figure in literature.

Now, in 2025, The Royal Mint is honouring Orwell’s life and legacy with a commemorative £2 coin. It’s a fitting tribute to a man who gave us one of the most iconic warnings about unchecked authority and surveillance.

Orwell’s 1984 is a literary masterpiece that introduced us to the concept of Big Brother, a world dominated by surveillance, propaganda, and thought control. Set in a dystopian future, it tells the story of Winston Smith, a man struggling to retain his individuality in a regime that demands complete obedience.
The themes of 1984—surveillance, manipulation of truth, and loss of personal freedom—feel more relevant today than ever. In a world of CCTV, social media monitoring, and mass data collection, Orwell’s cautionary tale hits close to home. It’s only fitting that this book’s essence is now captured in the design of a £2 coin.

The coin’s reverse, designed by Henry Gray, is a visual masterpiece layered with meaning. At its centre is a camera lens, cleverly disguised as an eye, surrounded by the ominous words “BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU”. This imagery is instantly recognisable to fans of 1984 and serves as a subtle nod to Orwell’s foresight.
Adding to its depth, the coin’s edge inscription reads “THERE WAS TRUTH AND THERE WAS UNTRUTH”, a line from 1984 that encapsulates the struggle to discern reality in a world riddled with propaganda. The obverse features the regal portrait of King Charles III, designed by Martin Jennings, tying the coin firmly to its contemporary roots.
For collectors and Orwell enthusiasts alike, the coin is available in multiple finishes:
Brilliant Uncirculated, Gold Proof, and Silver Proof editions.

- Outer: .925 sterling silver plated with fine gold

The George Orwell £2 coin is more than a piece of legal tender—it’s a conversation starter, a tribute to a literary genius, and a reflection of themes that remain as relevant today as they were when Orwell penned his masterpieces. That thing is sweet dude! These Royal Mint commems lately are solid, McCartney, Orwell...if they come out with a Monty Python coin next I'll be a new fan of the Royal Mint :D
