As a metal detector enthusiast, I love hearing about historic hoards being discovered, and the Worcestershire Conquest Hoard is a gem. Found near Leigh and Bransford in late 2023, this incredible collection of 1,368 Roman and Iron Age coins—valued at over £100,000—has historians buzzing.

What makes this hoard fascinating is its location on the edge of the Roman Empire, a spot not typically associated with such finds. The coins, many from Emperor Nero’s reign, may have been freshly minted in Rome before ending up buried in Worcestershire. Some never even entered circulation, their fine details surviving the centuries.

Currently on display at Worcester City Art Gallery and Museum until March, the hoard offers a rare glimpse into Roman Britain. It will then be formally valued at the British Museum, with the local museum racing to raise funds to keep it on permanent display.

This discovery rekindles the thrill of the hunt, whether in the field or adding to our stacks. It’s a reminder that history—and treasure—can still be found beneath our feet.

So, here’s to the Worcestershire Conquest Hoard, to the brave soul who discovered it, and to all of us who dream of unearthing our own little piece of history. Whether you’re out in the field with a detector or stacking silver Maples at home, the thrill of the hunt is what keeps us going. Who knows what might be waiting beneath the soil—or in the next stack you add to your collection?
