GoFundMe officially canceled the Freedom Convoy fundraiser on Friday and plans to distribute the remaining $9million of donated funds to 'credible and established charities' that were reportedly chosen by the convoy organizers and have been verified by the platform.

Someone had started a GoFundMe to support the truckers who are protesting in Canada and the donations were rolling in to the tune of $9 million. Due to pressure from politicians and police in Canada GoFundMe Canceled the fund's page and will not distribute the funds, rather they will give the funds to a charity.
If you donated you will have to proactively ask for a refund before 2/18/2022. I found this decision pure insanity and frankly aggravating even though I didn't donate and obviously had nothing to gain from the fund. I think it is the idea of handing money over in good faith and having this business decide whether or not a cause someone wants to donate to is "worthy". It's theft.
In any case this is exactly what Bitcoin was made for and why some felt there was a value in separating our currency to governments. Of course Twitter is loaded with "Bitcoin Fixes This" responses.
I was going to include the link for the new Bitcoin fund, but there are several out there and I haven't done enough due diligence to drop any of the wallet IDs. However, take a look there are several options and it's a great Use Case for Bitcoin.
To be fair on a personal level I'm not a fan of donating to a fund without knowing how it will be distributed and what's it's intended purpose is. I do support the Truckers and think it's ridiculous to associate them with hate groups and not only that, both sides know it's ridiculous.
We know the concern isn't that it is political or disruptive, as GoFundMe was used for CHAZ in Seattle and many BLM fund raisers during the riots and protests in 2020.
In any case one way to ensure your donation actually get's to the fundraiser is to use Bitcoin!
Meanwhile we will hear more about this story as the lawsuits unfold!

Just more signs of how they try to control the narrative and won't listen to the population. We already had enough evidence of this over the pandemic but everything they are doing now is about holding onto power and influence over the people instead of enabling the population to thrive.
Money, power, control is all that they really care about. It's sad really.

It should be an automatic refund if they are unwilling to follow through on their business model.
I would consider it fraud to take users money donated to a specific cause or product and unilaterally use it for another purpose.
They created a service that they are now unwilling to provide to causes that they do not like.
they changed direction in less than 24 hours and announced that they were just going to refund to all the donors. They had already refunded some so didn't make sense what their first announcement was.
Yeah, they saw it wasn't going to go over well at all.

I am not really surprised because GoFundMe has done similar things in the past. Personally I think those donators should just do a charge back. It would hurt GoFundMe and their reason is because it isn't going towards what they wanted to support.
Either way, the charge backs would hurt them more but I am sure there will be a lot of people who won't even realize this information because it came out on a Friday.

While I think BTC would of been a good option, I think that might turn away more people because most of the people paying are probably paying using a card. Of course I do think a BTC option from the start is definitely better than not having it so people can donate that if they wanted

Many cryptocurrencies are much better in this aspect than Bitcoin (BTC). Even Hive and the Hive Dollars (HBD) is better. And I mean the technical level. Free and fast transactions. Bitcoin (BTC) is not offering these things.
Well, I love hive but here is the truth.
You have to make it through the "sign up" process to have a hive wallet. There are very few good exit and entry points for Hive to or from USD.

Well. I am not from the USA, so I am not exchanging Hive to USD. I am from Hungary, so I exchange it to Hungarian Forint (HUF). It is very easy and relatively fast (it takes a few days for the arrival on your bank account), but also very expensive (the transaction fees are high) with Coinbase. As I currently know, currently Coinbase is the only cryptocurrency exchange, which support Hungarian Forint (HUF). But at least Coinbase is one of the biggest cryptocurrency exchanges in the world nowadays, so it is highly trusted.
Nice that it works well there.

GoFundMe knew what they were doing when they allowed the fund to be initiated. They got a knee on the neck with increasing pressure as the fund grew. I am making popcorn for the shitshow that surely must come about due to the lawsuits. Outright theft and it disgusts me.

You know what though? This whole thing; stealing the money. They're just trying to piss people off. Like a distraction. If they get rowdy then the cops can go in and shut it down.
