My crypto journey
Well, it's finally come to this. It's time I think, to talk about my dive into cryptocurrency, investing, and all that fun stuff.
I joined Hive back in December of 2019 (those paying attention to that date will note that we had a different name back then), on my first account - @oblivioncubed - where I shared my hobbies. At the time, I figured it was a throw-away gesture that I'd probably get bored of and abandon in 3 months but it was a fun little distraction so I let my cousin (@lacking) talk me into making an account and giving me my first bit of Hive to power up.
Prior to that decision, I hadn't really taken cryptocurrencies seriously at all, and I knew next to nothing about them. Sure, I - like many IT nerds of the last decade - had played around with shit like Dogecoin, but I figured crypto was an overly complex fad that would go nowhere, so I never gave it much attention. When my cousin told me that sometime near the end of 2020 bitcoin would hit 50k, I laughed at him and said 'that'll never happen!'. He was off by a few months, but damned if he didn't get it right enough.
So, that was my first taste of cryptocurrencies. An account on a social media platform that I thought would be a toss-away, and a dismissive wave at btc ever hitting 50k.
Over a year later, with now 3 accounts on Hive and constantly trying to shill the platform to my friends, family, and fellow TTRPG creatives... it's safe to say I'm hooked now. So, to keep things somewhat more simple for anyone who wants to follow just my gaming or just my crypto journey, I decided to spin this account up to track my progress and investments.
First off, let's look at my Hive account:
So, to start with, I thought I'd look at my account growth. I hit 2k HP last year, and earlier this year hit 4k HP, so I wanted to start keeping track so that when I eventually want to look back at my progress I can tell when I hit certain milestones.
I've been toying with my curation system for a little over a month now. I had been initially just following a voting trail and it was pulling in around 8% APR which was decent enough but I was hoping to see if I could manually get myself higher.
TLDR: I didn't. But it's been fun to track and experiment with! Thanks to the wonderful HiveStats.io website, tracking this has been a breeze.
Prior to my mucking about, these were my stats and my growth chart (For my main account, which is predominantly gaming and tabletop content):
The above were screenshots of my progress on Feb 2nd, 2021.
On Feb 6th, I took another screenshot for the first real day of manual curation kicking in. Curation HP was a little higher than previous trends, but wasn't really where I was hoping for it to be. At this time, I had been making most of my votes at the 50% to 100% power. Seeing that it wasn't exactly where I wanted, I figured I would experiment with more votes at less power.
So, today I snapped another screenshot of the account after a few weeks of lots of 10-30% votes, with only a select few 100% for users that I always give 100% votes to. The multiple small votes definitely trended me back towards a lower curation APR, which tells me that this particular experiment at my current HP level is done. I can get more return off fewer larger votes.
That said, through this all the overall growth of my account has been acceptable. With a toddler and a newborn, I don't get to post as regularly as I would like so most of my growth right now is driven by curation. I managed to break through to 4200HP on Feb 13th when I withdrew my investment winnings from @hive-roller.com and power them up.
Crypto Investments & HODLings!
Now, I've also begun purchasing crypto through Binance and beginning my modest investment journey, so I thought I'd also take a minute to show my current overview there. The vast majority of my holdings are purely in btc. I've given myself about $50 worth of btc to make trades with, and it's been going alright.
At the low values I'm comfortable playing with right now, I'm certainly not making bank. I'm not going to make myself a millionaire through my crypto trades, but it's a start into crypto trading and for that I tihnk it's worth documenting here.
Currently, my overview is:
I've got some of my spot portfolio tied up in CHR and some in GRT. CHR I'm stubbornly waiting for a profit price on, and GRT I'm HODLing because I think it's a coin that's going to have some great value in the long run.
I plan to continue to acquire BTC and GRT to hold onto and play the long game with, so we'll see how that all goes. I'm also mining an insignificant amount of LIT through the Binance Earn options, so we'll see if that pays off at all. If it does it'll be an extremely small uptick in my bags.
Anyhow, that's it for me for now. If you're interested in more of my newb-ass crypto journey, feel free to follow this account.
