In the past there were choices too. One could choose from an almost unlimited variety of professions, although I must admit that some extra choices are available today :)

Yeah you're right but I guess it could differ from society to society. Where I come, it was quite easy to figure out what one wanted to be and do. Nowadays the economy, the cultural revolution, the perspective and dominance of influence makes it very difficult..
That's a good point, but the choice was always there if one was determined enough to change their destiny. An exception being those who were considered property, or were otherwise bound to a specific person or place.
