The concept of web 3.0 is still vague in the minds of many people and Jack Dorsey coining web 5.0 (jumping Web 4.0) doesn’t help a bit. To my understanding, web 3.0 is the ownership of data in a decentralized and censorship resistant network. While Web 2.0 allowed us to transfer data in the form of documents, photos and videos, web 3.0 will allow us to transmit ownership.
So the key points are ownership and the ability to transfer that ownership. This is all made possible by the immutable blockchain technology.
With web 2.0, we rent platforms to share documents, photos and videos. Up until recently, we couldn’t even monetize the things we were sharing. That isn’t the case with web 3.0, you own everything you create and you can sell them. Isn’t that what business is about? To build and to sell?
I’m A Business, Man
Yes, Jay Z is the ‘creator’ of this quote. It has since then been echoed by business savvy individuals. It depicts the mentality shift into thinking like a business and not merely an individual. There are some fundamental differences between the two. However, web 3.0 allows us to combine the two and think like both. Not many people are able to think like a business. But in order to have the best experience and properly make use of web 3.0, thinking like a business is needed. I often joke that the world is getting more complex and we should stop thinking linearly. Now we have to learn how to comprehend multiple subjects at the same time.
Web 3.0 makes you a business from the first day. It allows you to own and build your account both from a personal and business perspective. It also puts personal branding on the forefront. Since, you’re not only selling a product or service, but also ‘yourself’.
A Paradigm Shift
My first paradigm shift happened when I commented on one of Taskmaster’s post lamenting that I made a few mistakes while opening my account but will make it right when I opened a business account. He replied saying every account is a business account. This initiated a chain reaction in my mind and changed the way I viewed Hive and web 3.0 in general. Prior to that I never saw the business perspective of Hive, I only saw it as a social media blockchain. Now I take things more seriously, focusing more on the business side and thinking long term.
