Hivers in the weekend community. It’s another weekend with interesting topics, but I will give a shot to the topic “Have you ever upheld your values and it turned out to your detriment?”
When I read through the topics and saw this, I remembered an incident many years ago, and it wasn’t a pleasant one.
It was 2016. I was in my second year at a noble university in Nigeria studying computer science. We had a very strong mathematics course that was 3 credit units. This course wasn’t an easy course to understand. But we kept coming to classes and doing our best, hoping for the best. A test was announced after about 5 weeks of study. Everyone started preparing and hoping for the best.
The lecturer shifted the test date and made sure it was held on a Saturday. We prepared for the test and settled on the set day.
Just before we started the test, the lecturer announced that he would send a special attendance sheet across to everyone, for which you have to pay some money, write how much you pay against our names, and sign it on the special attendance sheet. This was awkward for me. Growing up, I was taught to study and never pay for good grades, and as a result, I detest malpractice.
While I was still dazed and watching, my course mates started paying a good sum of money. I was surprised just then. I understand why evil thrives.
Test questions were shared, and the questions were entirely new to everyone. I had to write the best I knew how.
When the test result came out, I actually failed, and so many other colleagues passed very well, even without writing anything. I really felt bad and started having regrets. I wished I had paid the fee, but just then I remembered that our moral values and standards can cost us some pain, and I had to prepare better for the exams. Generally, I got a C-grade, which is very poor, but I am glad I held my values.
In the long run, my colleagues respected and had great regard for me, as I don’t allow pressure to change my moral standing on issues.
I really wish teachers/lecturers could do their work and malpractices were a thing of the past.
This is my weekend entry
