Beach of Altar / San Cosme (Barreiros) Lugo, Galicia. This beach owes its name to the sacrifices that in ancient times, were carried out in the great rock that is in its center, they did it as an offering to the gods, a few meters from its sands. This island, called "Pena de Altar ", in Galician, is accessible at low tide.
Altar Rock
With about 1100 meters long and with a width of between 50 and 140 meters, depending on the tide. Located at the mouth of the Masma River, on the right bank, and bounded by the Cantabrian coast.
Located on the route of the Primitive road to Santiago, a route that goes from Oviedo, and which is believed to have been undertaken by the Asturian King Alfonso II in the ninth century to venerate the remains of the Apostle Santiago, whose tomb had been discovered years earlier in Compostela.
This beach is a ZEPA (Special Protection Area for Birds). You can watch the seagulls while you enjoy the sound of the sea, take a swim or just a walk.
It is our favorite beach, whose landscape changes with the rise and fall of the tides, overcast or clear skies and the summer season is much more cheerful. When locals, local and foreign tourists, enjoy the sun.

Pets are not allowed and there is free parking. Entire families, couples and children go sunbathing all day long and those of us who are brave enough go swimming.
In summer, it comes alive and if the sky is clear, it is perfect. Its water is cold but it is worth getting out of it and sunbathing to warm up again!
