May the 1st? That's the opening date for the wilderness area below Hell's Canyon Dam in Idaho, too. Used to have a Mother's Day Weekend Camping and Riding trip there every year. You gots a lot more trees, but the Snake is a bigger river (It's called the River of No Return there). I've chipped ice to brush my teeth and such on mother's day weekend there...

I've driven by an over the Snake River a few time, never really stopped to enjoy it though, all ways just passing through on y way to somewhere else less healthy and more crowded and noisy. One of these days I really would like to stop at Hells Canyon, but will likely never happen. There are a lot of really nice river that get driven over going from Alaska to the lower 48, just never enough time to stop and enjoy.
