For a couple of weeks now I have had less free time than usual, I don't know if it's because of bad organization on my part or because I simply have more work than before, but the days go by very fast and the nights are even shorter.
Last week, for example, ended in the blink of an eye; the weekend flew by and once again it's Wednesday, there are only two days left until the end of the week and I feel like everything went by so fast. The good thing is that when the week is over comes the weekend and we can rest a little or do things we normally don't do on weekdays. In my case, this past weekend I was busy doing some work around the house and in my garden, where I planted a few things and harvested some more. So that's what this post will be about, my weekend working in my garden, a month later...
Last week, about Monday or Tuesday, I bought a couple of heads of garlic. I was researching how garlic is planted and what you need to do to get a clove of garlic to germinate. I realized that the process to plant it is very simple so I got to work.
The first thing I did was to place the garlic heads in a small tray with a little water. I placed them as shown in the image below so that only the bottom had contact with the water. In three days I had a root and by the fourth day a small green leaf had sprouted from each garlic clove.
On Saturday afternoon, when I came home from work, I took the garlic heads and separated all the garlic cloves. Each garlic clove has a root and a little green leaf, so these cloves are the ones that are planted in the soil.
In my case I already had all the spaces in the ground occupied, but I had a few pots from which I had already harvested green pods. Some say that potting is not the same as planting directly in the ground, but with proper care it can be done. The process is simple, clean the weeds out of the potting soil, open the hole and leave a clove of garlic in each hole, root side down and little green leaves up.
I did the same with three more pots and that was it, no more garlic cloves.
In a previous publication (*) I told you that I had some spinach seedlings. A seedling is a tiny, newborn plant, so to speak.

I had two empty pots left over, so I used them to plant the small spinach seedlings, four in one pot and three in another.
It was already getting dark, so I decided to leave everything to work the next day. The next morning all the seedlings dawned full of life, so I drove a stake in the middle of the pot so they will tangle around the pot as they grow. Yes, spinach needs a stake to direct it, otherwise it will grow wherever it wants.
You can barely see the sprouted garlic cloves, but there they are.
And that's how all my pots turned out.
Another little thing I found was a type of garlic known as "Chinese garlic". It is a smaller garlic that adds a lot of flavor to our preparations. I harvested them that same day, but used some for eating and some for replanting. One clove of Chinese garlic will grow one head of garlic.
Beans do very well in this type of climate where I live. Therefore, at just two months old my bean plants already have green pods that must be left on the plant for a month and a half to finish developing.
Another plant that I had a little forgotten about, because it takes four months to harvest, is okra. I have three plants, so I will be harvesting soon.
Earlier I told you that the spinach plant needs a guide stake to grow. The photo below shows more clearly how useful a guide wire or guide stake can be for some plants:
I planted all these plants just a month ago in tires stacked on top of each other. I filled them with soil and organic matter so they would have enough nutrients for the plants. They are growing very well, I hope they continue to do so.
Unfortunately I was not able to take pictures of some of the flowers in my garden, as there are not many; however, in the series of pictures below I show you a couple of flowers; one from a weed that produced that very pretty blue flower, another small plant that grew in the middle of the concrete without even watering it and, on the right, you can see a papaya plant or lechoza, as we call it here, that is already in the process of flowering. A papaya will grow from each flower.
In the publication I made last week in this same community, I showed you a bunch of banana or cambur that was almost ready to be harvested. This Sunday I was surprised to find that it was ready, as some of the bananas were already beginning to ripen. Therefore, I cut the bunch and kept it in the house, hanging it from the kitchen ceiling, where the whole bunch will finish ripening.
It is a huge bunch that produced very good fruit, so I feel satisfied with my garden, as I have harvested the product of my hard work.
One thing I would like to show you is a pair of second hand lamps that I bought at a garage sale. They are not in the best condition but they look nice. I am still undecided whether to use them on the patio and for the inside of the house.
I think that if I clean them well they can look great in the living room, but the initial idea was to place them in the patio, in a roofed area. I will tell you what I did with these lamps....

Desde hace un par de semanas he tenido menos tiempo libre del habitual, no sé si por mala organización de mi parte o porque simplemente tengo más trabajo que antes, pero los días pasan muy rápido y las noches son aún más cortas.
La semana pasada, por ejemplo, terminó en un abrir y cerrar de ojos; el fin de semana me pasó volando y otra vez es miércoles, apenas faltan dos días para que termine la semana y siento que todo pasó muy rápido. Lo bueno es que cuando termina la semana viene el fin de semana y podemos descansar un poco o hacer cosas que normalmente no hacemos en los días de semana. En mi caso, el fin de semana que pasó me ocupé en trabajos de la casa y en mi huerto, en el cual sembré unas cuantas cosas y coseché otras más. Así que de eso tratará esta publicación, de mi fin de semana trabajando en mi huerto, un mes después...
La semana pasada, mas o menos el lunes o martes, compré un par de cabezas de ajo. Estuve investigando cómo se siembra el ajo y qué hay que hacer para que un diente de ajo germine. Me di cuenta que el proceso para sembrarlo es muy sencillo así que puse manos a la obra.
Lo primero que hice fue colocar las cabezas de ajo en una pequeña bandeja con un poco de agua. Los coloqué tal como se aprecia en la imagen de abajo para que solo la parte de abajo tuviese contacto con el agua. En tres días ya tenía raíz y al cuarto ya había brotado una pequeña hoja verde desde cada diente de ajo.
El sábado en la tarde, cuando llegué de trabajar, tomé las cabezas de ajo y separé todos los dientes de ajo. Cada diente de ajo tiene raiz y una hojita verde, así que estos dientes son los que se siembra en la tierra.
En mi caso ya tenía ocupado todos los espacios en el terreno, pero tenía unas cuantas macetas de las que ya había cosechado vainas verdes. Algunos dicen que sembrar en maceta no es lo mismo que sembrar directamente en la tierra, pero con el cuidado adecuado se puede hacer. El proceso es simple, limpiar la maleza de la tierra de la maceta, abrir el hueco y dejar dejar un diente de ajo en cada hueco, con la raíz hacia abajo y las hojitas verdes hacia arriba.
Hice lo mismo con tres macetas más y listo, se acabaron los dientes de ajo.
En una publicación (*) anterior les comenté que tenía unas plantulas de espinaca. Una plantula es una planta pequeñita, recién nacida, por decirlo de alguna manera.

Me sobraron dos macetas vacías, así que las ocupé para sembrar las pequeñas plántulas de espinaca, cuatro en una maceta y tres en otra.
Ya estaba anocheciendo, así que decidí dejar todo para trabajar el día siguiente. A la mañana siguiente amanecieron todas las plántulas llenas de vida, así que clavé una estaca en medio de la maceta para que se enreden alrededor de la maceta a medida que crezcan. Sí, la espinaca necesita una estaca para direccionarla, sino crecerá hacia donde le de la gana.
Apenas se ven los dientes de ajo germinados, pero ahí están.
Y así quedaron todas mis macetas.
Otra cosilla que encontré fue un tipo de ajo que se conoce como "ajo chino". Es un ajo más pequeño que aporta mucho sabor a nuestras preparaciones. Los coseché ese mismo día, pero usé algunos para comer y otros para volverlos a sembrar. De un diente de ajo chino crecerá una cabeza de ajo.
Los granos se dan muy bien en este tipo de clima en el que vivo. Por lo tanto, con apenas dos meses ya mis plantas de frijoles tienen vainas verdes que deben dejarse en la planta por mes y medio para que terminen de desarrollarse.
Otra planta que tenía un poco olvidada, porque tarda cuatro meses en cosechar, es el quimbombó. Tengo tres plantas, así que pronto estaré cosechando.
Anteriormente les comenté que la planta de espinaca necesita una estaca guía para crecer. En la foto a continuación se observa con mayor claridad lo útil que puede ser un hilo guía o una estaca guía para algunas plantas:
Todas esas plantas las sembré apenas hace un mes en neumáticos apilados uno encima del otro. Los rellené de tierra y materia orgánica para que tuviesen suficientes nutrientes para las plantas. Están creciendo muy bien, espero que sigan así.
Lamentablemente no pude tomarle fotos a algunas flores de mi huerto, ya que no hay muchas; sin embargo, en la serie de fotos a continuación les muestro un par de flores; una de una maleza que produjo esa flor azul muy bonita, otra pequeña planta que creció en medio del concreto sin siquiera regarla y, a la derecha, se observa una planta de papaya o lechoza, como la llamamos aquí, que ya está en proceso de floración. De cada flor crecerá una papaya.
En la publicación que hice la semana pasada en esta misma comunidad, les mostré un racimo de banana o cambur que ya estaba casi listo para ser cosechado. Este domingo me llevé la sorpresa de que ya estaba listo, pues algunas bananas ya estaban comenzando a madurar. Por lo tanto, corté el racimo y lo resguardé en la casa, colgandolo del techo de la cocina, allí terminará de madurarse todo el racimo.
Es un racimo enorme que produjo frutos muy buenos, así que me siento satisfecho con mi huerto, pues he cosechado el producto de mi duro trabajo.
Algo que me gustaría mostrarles es un par de lámparas de segunda mano que compré en una venta de garaje. No están en las mejores condiciones pero están bien bonitas. Aún no me decido si usarlas en el patio y para el interior de la casa.
Creo que si las limpio bien pueden lucir bastante en la sala, pero la idea inicial era la de colocarlas en el patio, en un área techada. Ya les contaré qué hice con estas lámparas...
