I like that quote a lot as I do with many quotes from the great Roman emperor and philosopher Marcus Aurelius Antoninus. It means we are what we think about most when boiled down I suppose and if that is indeed true then I'm THE WEEKEND.
Thursday is close enough to Friday for me to start thinking about the weekend I think, especially in a week like I've had so far - Don't get me started on it, please. It's 2140 Thursday night and it is bucketing down with rain right now which is nice to hear. I have some music playing, something soft and relaxed, and my thoughts are aimed at the weekend and what I might do with it considering the weather has been very wet and wintery. I've got a few inside ideas but I'm leaning in other directions.
Saturday
I'll be shooting at the range on Saturday. I'll be honest and say I'm not really into it but I feel obligated as there's a chap there, one I used to work with, that has just joined the range and he's asked me to be there to baby sit him. He didn't say baby sit though, that's what I'm calling it. This guy is a bit annoying to be honest so I'm hoping he doesn't think the fact he's at my range makes us mates; that title goes to a rare few in my life and he doesn't qualify.
It's a competition day at the range on Saturday so I'll be shooting IPSC for the better part of it; that's fun of course and despite bugalugs being there bothering me I'm sure it'll be a decent day. I know, I sound a bit grumpy with the fellow right? That's because I am.
I'm going to hook up with a police-officer mate prior to the range, have some breakfast and coffee, and try and convince him to erase some speeding fines I got a year ago. I'm wearing him down I think...Just a matter of time and poof no more speeding fines.
I'm making pizza on Saturday night; it's easy, tasty and if I make enough I'll have some for breakfast and lunch on Sunday. There's a Formula One Grand Prix from Silverstone, UK this weekend also so I'll watch that late Saturday night snuggled up with...Snacks y'all.
Sunday
This is where things get complicated as I've been asked to go somewhere and I don't really want to. It's not that I don't like the person who asked, it's more the location, one of the bar-venues in the city; full of people posing with their designer labels, celebrating their own magnificence and talking about money and all the things they have. Wankers. Right now I'm leaning for a not going decision although I'll reassess on Saturday I guess.
What really want to do is hike on Sunday, in the pine forest. It'll be moist up there due to the recent rains, cold too, but I'm ok with that, I'll be hiking so will warm up.
I want to do a long hike with all the trimmings. You know, backpack, trail mix, some lunch, [probably left over pizza] and a few litres of water. My plan would be to do some map-navigation practice by staying off the trails and tracks and going cross country. It basically means using map and compass to navigate from my truck, cross-country, to certain places like fire towers, a dam, quarry or some permanent landmark that appears on my topographic map.
I could probably do without the practice but I like to keep my skills sharp. And don't worry, you won't lose me folks, I'll have my Garmin GPS unit with me as a back up and my truck way-pointed so if I get lost I'll be able to get back to the vehicle. I'll still have all the relevant safety equipment of course. I'm a prepared man.
I'm really keen for the navigation-hike-day and less keen for the socialising-with-wankers day so that's probably what's going to happen. It will depend heavily on the weather though as that pine forest is very steep terrain and reasonably remote also so I won't take too many risks. I guess I'll get some pressure to go to the other thing too, but dealing with pressurised situations is a skill-set I possess. I'm not one to capitulate easy.
So that's pretty much it hivers...Just some thoughts on what my weekend might encompass. Sunday night will be relaxed as I'll be watching the F1 race and polishing off any left over pizza...Or making more. It probably doesn't sound like a totally exciting weekend to most, but for a simple bloke like me sounds pretty good.
I know it's only Thursday, indeed the start of Thursday for most of you, but don't hold back...You're allowed to think about the weekend so tell me what you're up to.

Sounds like a good plan...especially that hike. Do you ever put your hikes on that app Strava, or something similar? I was thinking of maybe starting to use something like to find some stuff next week on the North Shore.
Should be good...Unless I decide to go to that wanker-parade at the bar...Which I won't.
Strava, don't know it but might give it a squiz. I don't tend to use that stuff because I'm analogue. Lol.
Yeah I like the analog approach too - I have some friends out West who use that app to scout treks/hikes in the mountains. No mountains here though, lol - I probably don't need it
I'll have a look because I've been thinking lately I should work out how far I'm actually walking, just for curiosities sake.
Yeah, me too...not a big fan of the GPS tabbing me...but I carry a Droid around all of the time, so I'm not sure why I think I have a choice, lol
Haha, yeah it's funny...Here we have to check in by bar code because of covid and people whinge about privacy...Then splash their entire life on Facebook on tracking device they carry with them everywhere they go. Retards.
Lol - same thing over here! I have a guy I work with who is always on his phone, non stop...I mean always on his phone. But he won't get a poke because that is filled with tiny nano trackers and he's not going to let the US government track his moves every day. I kid you not -I have no problem with people who don't want to get a shot. I get it, but throw the phone away if you are worried about Big Brother
That was a fun read sir. Wish you woulda waited a day to tell me what day it is but mom always used to say wish in one hand, shit in the other, see which fills up first.
I didn't know I was gonna tell you or anyone else that today so I'm a little off guard now an unsure where this is going.
What in the hell is a Bugalug?? And how come the wankers aren't bugalugs?
The wankers aren't bugalugs as bugalugs isn't condescending enough for them. Wankers probably isn't either.
Your mum has good sayings! Lol.
I love me some dictionary days. I woulda put my bet on slang for sure.
Bust out a bugalugs now and then mate, those who hear it will gape in amazement at your masterful use of that Australianism. You can then further boggle their minds with an explanation of the meaning.
I appreciate the slice of Australian you explained here. I was equally confused but now also glad I know it. I'm going to definitely insert that into some conversation just to confuse people around here. That's a fun thing to do and watch them as they try to figure out what the hell I just said and if it's offensive or not.
It sounds like you enjoy the same sort of fun I do. Discombobulating people is one of my hobbies. Bust out a bugalugs now and then...It'll be rewarding.
Sounds like an amazing plan to me too as I wait for weekends 😍😁 Though I have to shift to Lahore for my academics so I'll be making myself prepared for the journey as it's some 1200 km away. Also I am having difficulty understanding the Hive transactions so I'll look up to an expert like you for advices and guidance ( if I found any). Sounds boring right? It actually is😄
A 1200km road trip to Lahore sounds pretty far...You driving or on a train? Here going 1200km generally means seeing nothing in between, 110kp/h all the way.
I'm looking forward to the weekend but I have Friday to go...Several client appointments and three meetings internally. It's going to be busy but I'll survive I guess.
All the best for your journey. I hope it's smooth.
Yeh you better not get lost XP
Hike sounds preferable to socialising x_x
I say because I have to go to a meeting after work tomorrow and I really don't wannaaaaaaaa [whine]
And your weekend sounds quite nice to me though I replace Grand Prix watching with roleplaying and yet more drawing for mine XD
Miss me you reckon?
I'll be ok, boy got skills Ry.
As I type this (Friday) it's raining cats and dogs, literally. I just saw a short haired schnauzer bounce off a car roof and slide down the hood. [OK, not literally.] This bodes ill for my sojourn into the woods of course; too much water and things get mighty moist up there. Sometimes wet is good, other times not. You know? Still, I think it'd have to be a CAT 5 cyclone to stop me going so...I better harden up.
Oh, and on the socialising thing...I know you meant socialising loosely because, well I don't really know what that is! My concept is more like being there and that's where it ends. 😂 Although...I'll not even go that far methinks.
It'll be a good weekend, as yours will once you get that pesky meeting out the way.
Yes :<
Damn is the schanuzer and the car okay XD
I saw and heard that clear as anything from the bonk and slight dent of it hitting the top of the car to the squeegee noise as it slid down onto the hood and then I saw it get up and bound off with a mildly confused expression, my brain I donno xD
Not for the first time I'm wondering if you are just seriously introverted or if you have adhd with possibly a side of autism XP
Car yes. Schnauzer...Hmm, not so much. Your description of the event was spot on.
I'm introverted and don't value poor company as it doesn't add any value to me or my life. I am cautious with whom I give much of me, most don't deserve it.
Marcus Aurelius was always one I could never really get into. I even bought his Meditations at the start of one of my road trips for reading material but couldn't read more than a page or two without having to put it down. I finally just agreed to disagree with the stoics...
While you're at it could you make some of my speeding fines go away?
I understand that...I've read it, toughed it out and in the end got value although it's not something I'd probably do again. I like some of his quotes though...Allows me to inject a semi-clever aspect to my posts that would otherwise just be knucklehead ramblings. Lol
I'll work on mine first, then once he's conditioned, I'll open the flood gates on everyone's speeding fines!
Over the years I've read a decent bit of his writings in various contexts, there's definitely value to be had. If I recall my history correctly he was a fairly decent fellow, at least for a Roman emperor. My issue with him and the Stoics more generally is my brain is saying take action! when they're saying endure. Not necessarily mutually exclusive but I'm inclined towards a more proactive approach to things.
Best of luck with that and the competition this weekend!
I can't imagine the job to have been easy and I'd say that each who held the title did so for a good reason although some would have been far worse than others. Caligula comes to mind although I've read that the sources of the more negative aspects of his reign are questionable at best. [I don't have the research to know differently, and I htink very little about his reign survives.] He met a grisly end though, either way.
Still, I wonder what makes an Roman Emperor you know?
I hear what you're saying about Aurelius and the take action ethos. I operate thusly.
Weather is terrible here, conditions at the range will be tomorrow too I'd say...I'll still go. I'm hoping Sunday is a bit better. Looking forward to that long hike.
what makes an Roman Emperor
I think the recipe calls for equal parts ruthlessness and paranoia. Judging by what I've read of his writings, I suspect Aurelius was one of the few that may have gave some thought to more than just what was good for him.
Nero and Caligula are the best known of the far worse category, and while what you've read is most likely correct they were still some rather unsavory individuals. We'll probably never know for sure, historians have to make do with what survives and sorting out biases and bad information 1000+ years later is something less than a precise science.
There's a saying/bumper sticker here, a bad day fishing is better than a good day working, I imagine the same holds true for the range. Enjoy the hike, snap a few photos for me!
I'm actually pretty interested in the Roman Empire and have visited a lot of ruins both in Italy and Britain. I'm no expert of course, just find it interesting. I'd say you're right about the emperor thing...A fairly powerful but precarious position where watching ones six was probably well advised.
We have the same saying here. It's a good one and yep, I'm looking forward to the hike...But shooting first, today. I'm going old-school with my P-09 instead of Shadow 2. I'll not win with it...But figured I'd blow the cobwebs out. I'll probably do a post.
I'll catch ya.
Good luck with the fines and the wankers. And that is not a sentence I thought I'd type today. :)
Lol...Well said!
Sounds like the pretentious bar in wanker town isn’t going to happen if you ask me! Hopefully the weather holds out and you can really have the best excuse to say hell no, not into that.
Mellow weekends are great. We don’t get a whole lot of those with the little man anymore lol. We go out for hours, are tired and come home then he walks in the door and asks “what are we going to do now????” Lol. Keeps us exercising at least!
Tie a few heavy weights to E-dog, that'll slow him down so you can find some respite. Lol.
Yeah, wanker-town ain't happening I think. I just can't do it. I may even say,, yeah I'll see you there and just not turn up! Happened before.
They're like, where were you? I'm like, hiking. 😜
You have some good plans for weekends. I had planned a staycation next week in my backyard, but probably that won't happen. Enjoy your shooting at the range bro!
Make the staycation happen, you owe it to yourself.
