I began a new job this week, a management role in transport logistics, and I've been busy. I was supposed to fly out on Monday to the companies' head office in Brisbane but someone got sick with the covid-bastard and the trip was postponed until next week. I've spent this week acclimatising to the new environment, the information technology, processes and procedures and basically just settling in. I've thought a lot about the job also, how I'll roll it out moving forward; basically, evaluating and contemplating the as is situation.
I'm not unaccustomed to change and, considering this role is a decent jump away from what I've done for the last twenty years or so, I think I'm handling it well; having the right attitude helps of course, and I do.
I've had to work at it though, and will also next week when I'm at head office meeting the team there and going through some intensive training to help bring me up to speed more rapidly. Having said that, I know what I know, have skills and stand by them. It'll be great to get some company-specific training though and to have the chance to demonstrate to the up-chainers that the faith they have placed in me was not misplaced.
I'm flying on Sunday morning and will spend the afternoon and evening wandering about Brisbane city, which I love.
They have arranged a pretty nice looking hotel for me which is great as after each day at head office I'll go back there and work a little to make sure what I've been doing over the day has sunk in. They have a company car for me whilst I'm there so I'll be mobile but it's unlikely I'll use it other to get to the head office location and to pick up food. It's nice of them to do so though as they could have told me to take Uber's instead.
I'll be back on the following weekend, unless they extend the trip which has been talked about. I'll not mind either way really, in fact, I see a benefit to extending rather than flying home then back up in a few weeks again. We'll see I guess.
I'm pleased with my new role so far. The company seems switched on, the chain of command from me to the very top is only three people long, and they've demonstrated a willingness to support me which indicates they also do the same with the rest of the team; a good team-environment makes for a happier and more productive company. I'll need to perform, there is no doubt about it, but as Ayrton Senna says above, one can fly high by using the power of the mind, having determination, good instincts and by applying past experiences to a task. So, I'll just do that.
That's what my weekend is going to be about this weekend; Saturday preparing to fly and Sunday flying. How about you?

It is good that the change of job is taken with decision and optimism, it is very good to feel at ease in your workplace, to face new challenges.
This weekend I hope to earn something extra as I am part of a team that will paint the interior of the building where I work. This is not my forte, but you have to do everything!
Optimism first and foremost.
I know how tough things are for you and it's great that you're the sort of fellow who is able to do what's required, put aside ego and pride, and just get on with it. It speaks highly of a man's character when he can do so.
A good working environment would always motivate anyone to give their best. Knowing your talents and how you can easily adapt, I know this would be a walk in the park for you...
I thought you had travelled already. So sorry about the covid. I can't wait for normalcy to return. Covid isn't helping in any way at all... Please keep being strong and I know you are doing your best too.
Been a bit down this week too. You already know how my weekend went but I guess the stress is now taking its toll on me. Head ache and body pains. I didn't have a decent sleep and that hotel I stayed was a nightmare.
This will the case sometimes, but not always. I work hard, always, but don't always seal the deal.
Postponed at the last minute.
I'm not down about it as it gave me this week to acclimatise and settle in, get my company car sorted, you know, adjust the seat, work out how fast it goes and if it's better for circuit racing or rally driving. Lol.
The hotel they put me up in for next week is a very nice one so I'm hoping to get a good sleep each night although that's not a guarantee; I often don't sleep well. We'll see.
I hope you've recovered from your weekend away and have had a good week.
I love how you see the positive side to it. Absolutely...it's enough time on your hands to get used to how things are there. I wish you all the best sir...
Ah...we are the same. Hardly get a decent sleep but since I've been feeling this way, I had to. I know it won't be easy but just try sir.
Thank you sir and have a wonderful rest... See you tomorrow...those prompts haha.
There is a lot of comfort associated with the new job from what I've read, does this mean you may have to relocate with your family soon or the flying in and out will be convenient for you that way?
The job is here in my city, the trip to Brisbane is for training and familiarisation purposes so I'll not have to relocate. I will fly in and out as needed.
My work will primarily be here although the company operates nationally. There may be some travel here and there but mostly I'll be able to stay home.
Thanks for your comment.
I wondered about that and almost asked you on my last comment on your other post, but then I thought you might be saving up for a post about it and here you are !
I see on the news about so many folks flying and so many things opening back up and although I am not saying they shouldn't, I am expecting covid to be picking back up. Contrary to some folks pretending it is over, it's not. Fortunately, not so many people seem to be dying from it now. I understand people are tired of it and so am I!! But it's not over.
Sounds like everything is going well so far and that is always good.
Yeah, I wasn't going to say much but knew some may wonder so here so am, posting about it.
Covid is still a think here, not that you'd know though, so many things (almost everything) is back to normal and yet thousands are getting it. Like you say, it's mostly mild cases now though. I've not had it yet (as far as I'm aware) but I may end up with it at some stage I suppose.
The job is going well so far. I'm not really very productive just now, but what I do this week and next will make me productive later.
Excellent to hear G and it sounds like it is a switched on company. A week's delay means they should be ready for you though. How long is the flight you will be taking?
I think so. The head office was recently flooded in the Brisbane flood scenario so they've had a lot to contend with but they seem to react positively. I think they'll have a plan for me.
The flight is almost 2.5 hours direct...enough time for snacks. 😊
So many floods worldwide recently. Well they sound to be switched on, so looks a good move on your part.
A 2.5 hour flight, ah yes plenty of time for snacks!
Well, I am guessing that putting it off is better than you showing up and unsuspectingly mingling with the Covid-stricken lad. The hotel is nice and a car to boot? That is a real bonus for you. Uber works fine, but, your own company car to use, yes!?
Getting there a day ahead is nice too, being able to reestablish the lay of the land is something I like to do. Brisbane is no stranger to you, but, that section of town may be.
I hope you are enjoying a peaceful week, and look! It is already Wednesday and half of my week is gone. I know it is almost 3 am, so I hope you are enjoying your sleep.
I was sleeping like a baby...until a dream sort of jolted me awake and then I wasn't sleeping at all. It wasn't a pleasent one.
Anyway, yeah they seem to look after the team. I have a company vehicle here in Adelaide but didn't expect one up there so that was nice and they booked a hotel that has kitchen facilities so I'll be able to stay in and cook (toasted sandwiches probably) and work at night. I might go to Southbank one night, for a walk and maybe the museum. We'll see. Maybe even hit some clubs. (Not).
Yep, it's Thursday morning, bright and early. Only a couple days to go and it's the weekend. Gun range Saturday, getting organised for the trip then I'm gone.
I hope you have a good rest of the week.
Yikes! I did comment on it. I thought so, but, then it slipped my mind.
😂

I don't think making people take Ubers is how they retain staff they want to keep though XD
I've been feeling extremely disconnected recently, didn't consciously register we're about to hit another weekend til I read this x_x
Yeah, there being really good. I had thought I'd keep receipts for food and claim them at tax time...Nope, send them through and they pay them. They know what's up.
Well, I'm glad you realised... Thursday today...One more Day and the weekend! 😁
Sounds like a decent company to work for?
I do usually have to have some idea of what day it is because the kids have got stuff on XD but some connections have been evading me. Like I knew it was Thuursday today but all that meant was that eldest has TAFE and I had some specific chores and errands to do and that's where that stopped x_x
You'll have time to explore over the weekend as well right, not going to be all work and no play? :)
It seems that way. Naturally all this stuff comes with the expectation of a solid performance, that means I have to create solid revenue, but that's what I've done for the last 20 years (create solid revenue) so I should be able to make it work.
Seems that solid performance is definitely something you can be relied on for.
Sometimes yes...Other times...Maybe not. I'm a knucklehead after all.
Very interesting. I look forward to reading more about the new career move.
As I am going to be leaving mine at or near the end of this year. I will no longer be paying a huge tax bill to fund a corrupt government such as ours.
No idea what I will do yet. It may still be a driving role of some sorts. But local only and part time.
You're leaving the linehaul work behind? Not a bad thing mate, you've done your share. Local runs mean more time at home and part time means more time to live your life. All the best with it.
