Flying, trashing hotel rooms and going home

The more one does and sees and feels, the more one is able to do, and the more genuine may be one's appreciation of fundamental things like home, and love, and understanding companionship.

- Amelia Earhart -

It seems every time I fly lately, it's raining.

I left home Sunday morning and headed to the airport; it was bucketing with rain and blowing a gale. Luckily I had the forethought to bring an umbrella for the walk to the terminal from the long-term car park though; I'm smart like that.

I parked my company car, taking note of exactly where so I'd not loose it in a week or so when I flew back in, then battled through the pelting rain and howling wind to get to the terminal. Remember that umbrella? Well, it came in handy, but was turned inside out so many times it was ruined. Throwing it into the nearest bin with disgust, I proceeded through security, a process I hate, and went to the airline's private lounge for refreshments whilst I waited to board. If you've ever been in there you'll know it's legit.

A little later I boarded and enjoyed endured a reasonable flight to Brisbane of a couple hours long. The first thirty minutes weren't all that smooth and there were a few shrieks of concern here and there, not mine, but overall it was fine. I landed, collected the company car that was waiting for me and headed to the hotel that would be my home for the next little while.

That's my room above in those images - a view to the right of my balcony this morning, and left from the balcony last night. You can see some of the city of Brisbane just to the right of the night-time shot. They booked me a hotel closer to work fortunately, so I've been able to avoid the city.

The room is clean, serviceable, and has it's own bathroom of course. There's a fridge, microwave, sink, tea and coffee facilities and a desk to work at, which is where I'm writing this post. There's also the worlds smallest bottle of complimentary wine. I'll probably drink it, get hammered and trash the room like a rock star one of these nights; the company can pay for it. That's actually a joke people, you know, like, it's supposed to be funny, not factual.

Work has been good so far. I'm here to visit the company's head office and learn their systems and procedures, meet the staff and generally be awesome. It's not been too difficult and I feel I'm making a good impression on the team and the few above me on the food chain.

I haven't been doing much after work and despite the fact is the company is paying for everything, including food and drinks, I've not eaten out. I went to the supermarket and got a few things for breakfast and dinner and have stayed in my room, or on the balcony, reading, Hiving and on the phone.

I think I'll head out tonight though, and maybe on the weekend too, have a look around and see what's going on.

I used to live in Brisbane for a short time and loved heading to Fish Lane in Brisbane South which is full of funky bars, cafés, restaurants, art and entertainment; a magnet for, well...cool and funky people. I'm not sure cool and funky describes me, but...I guess I have my own charms...depending on who is doing the looking and I'm sure I could fit in over there for just a little bit.

Other than that, this is an all-work sort of trip and I'm packing in as much as I can to make the best use of the time I'm here before flying home. Lone business trips like this can be a little boring when not actually working, lonesome to some degree, but I have my book, Hive and...wait a minute...why don't you come over! Let me know if you can and I'll buzz you up to my room and we can share that miniature bottle of wine and trash the room together like rock stars!

Design and create your ideal life, don't live it by default - Tomorrow isn't promised so be humble and kind

there were a few shrieks of concern here and there, not mine

A likely story ;D

Would love to come over but you're on the wrong side of the country ;D

Company car on both ends? Nice.

Enjoy the trip and the nights out and the parties in your room ;D

Oh yeah, I know huh? I hadn't expected a company car here but they provided one. Cool right?

I'll be trashing the room on the last night, I'll send photos. 😁

I hate umbrellas! I carried one for weeks thinking it would save me when it rained only then to have it break and turn inside out in the wind the first time I had to use it. Bunged the damn thing in the nearest bin. Now I carry and ultra light rain coat instead.

I love Brisbane by the way. I visited just before Covid and stayed there for a couple of weeks. Such a lovely vibe in the city.

Don't down the wine in one!

Umbrella's are our saviour, when they work right, and a nightmare when they don't. The one I threw away was a cheap one that retracted as I was going to fly with it, but I hadn't realised how terrible it really was until it turned into a mess of fabric and bent framework. Binned.

Yeah, Brisbane is a nice place. A big city with a small-town sort of vibe. Relaxed but with loads to do. I enjoyed living here for the short time I did. It's all work for me on this trip though, or mostly.

Oh, and don't worry I'll take it easy with that wine...I mean, it's about the size of two gulps so not much harm can come of it. Probably. 😊

On my way Bro.!!

Haha, I knew it!

What a busy bee, keep it up, soon you will reap your hard work for sure.

Yeah, I keep pretty busy.

Saludos!

I'm really sorry, I don't speak Spanish but I appreciate you leaving me a message.

I'm sorry! My english is very bad, but I wanted to say:

Very smart when carrying the umbrella! Too bad it got ruined. By the way, I also hate airport security! The room looks great and the view is very nice too! And yes, those trips can be boring, at least you have Hive, the book and this miniature wine haha. Wait, I'm going there! I'll be a couple of days lol. Cheers!

Umbrella's are good when they are good, and bad when they are not good. Airport security is a terrible process and I hate having to do it...But we don't have much choice I guess right?

Wait, I'm going there! I'll be a couple of days lol. Cheers!

Great you can help me with my work!

You are right about the umbrella. And yes, we don't have much of a choice about security other than doing what they say. Last time they threw out my perfume and all my creams because they were over the size allowed so I hated this process the most haha.

I was actually going for the wine haha but my last translation went wrong I meant it will take a couple of days to arrive and it will be over haha.

Glad you got there safe and are all settled in.

From the name on that wine bottle, it appears you are supposed to drink it and go out and sow some Wild Oats...LOL ... it's a least suggested I'm thinking.

Lol, yeah I was going to write about that aspect but didn't seem able to without tumbling down the rabbit hole so decided to leave well enough alone. 😉

LOL.... and here I come along and try to shove you down that rabbit hole anyways.

I'm not a positive influencer all the time it seems. 😄

Lol, no...You're more like a bad influence...as if I need much of a prompt to head down that path.

Not too difficult for you to be awesome as I think for you it's second nature :)
Just be careful that they don't want to keep you there, so I think that the trashing episode will be a good idea :D

Oh yeah, the State Manager back in my home State said that...Make sure they don't entice you to stay. 🤣

So, trash the room like a rock star? Ok, look out for the post! 😋

Glad to hear that I am right, as I would certainly entice you to stay. Wait until you come to South Africa as then you will see what I mean 🤣 !LOLZ

I certainly will keep an eye out for the post 😉

I asked my dog what's two minus two.
He said nothing.

The photos of Brisbane are very nice, but I understand that being alone is boring and if you have already lived there you must know a lot, it sounds good so many wonderful places to visit and have fun such as cafes, bars, restaurants, art among others, but it must be very boring go alone, although you should take advantage of the times that you are not working and go for a good walk and thus breathe different airs.

The thing about the small bottle with which you could get drunk and destroy the room makes me laugh a lot hahahaha, the courtesies and their things. Greetings, I hope you can have a good time, even if you are alone. Enjoy because as you say, tomorrow is not promised. Blessings.

Brisbane is a nice city with a relaxed atmosphere and a lot of things to keep a person occupied so it's fun being here mostly. Of course, I'm working so it's not as much fun but I manage to have some time to myself and relax when I can.

That is tiny! Hang on, I'll beam you over a proper size.

Happy to hear you made it all in one piece. You are just antsy to get moving on this work gig so you can hop back on that plane and hit the reverse button.

The room looks nice and you get to Hive too? I am jealous. Totally. I had a pipe burst Friday and had mitigation at the house for three days, I now need to get back with the insurance company to put some ceilings back on, as they were torn down by the mitigation team and insulation hopefully this week and paint...

Le sigh.

Life is always interesting, yes? Relax and have a good time for me.

Relaxation mode is initiated and of...now. 😁

It sounds like you had a rough few days but it's on the mend right? I mean, the pipe is fixed and all. At least you have insurance. Water damage sucks though.

I am glad it seems like you are being looked after and the new job is starting well. Trashing the room, well you need to play your guitar first though to do that.
The wind and rain part made me chuckle! I was reading and when you mentioned the umbrella, thought to myself that in the wind and rain here they are bloody useless, so when you chucked I did laugh!
Great to see hear you are impressing the few above you in the food chain.
I am with on the eating out part. For me often making something is better than eating out the whole time. So you will be there at the weekend, enjoy the nightlife!

I didn't brring my guitar but there's a coiple spoons in the drawer and there's nothing quite like some spoon-playing right? Then, room trashing.

so when you chucked I did laugh!

Dumbass umbrella. Lol.

Ah spoon playing, a great alternative!

Have a great week in Brisbane.
Unfortunately, I cannot make it but hey!, that leaves the whole wine bottle for yourself :)

The whole two mouthfuls? Oh, aren't I lucky. Lol.

Now if I can confirm that you have a real job, I don't know why I thought you were a retired man who spent 80% of his time in hive.

The activities you had to do on your work mission sound great and I had to turn back to look at the little bottle of wine 🤣😆 you are supposed to taste a few drinks not get drunk, you are working.

P. D. I looked at the picture and it looked a little weird and came to the conclusion that you have big hands. 🤣

I know the bottle is small.

Really? Retired? I wish!

I have a job, I'm in management at executive level, although I'd rather be able to give it up altogether. Oh well, maybe in several years huh?

Lol, yeah, that bottle is the smallest wine bottle in history. It's a midget wine!

😆👍😉🤗

Lol this tickled me. Galen and his giganticus hands 🤣

I’m such a yokel that I found out the hard way that some hotel refrigerators have built in sensors that automatically make charges to your bill if you remove any items to make room for your own stuff. That’s just evil.

Haha, yep that's big-city-evil. It happens though, touch it, ya bought it. What devious mind came up with that? (Probably Jeff Bezos.) 🤣

I suddenly remember amelia earhart in the song of mandy moore's titled "someday well know". I never thought she exist.

Traveling alone is the best for me because it allows me to do different things whatever I'd like to do. Also, good thing the company paid it for you. So maybe you'd love cooking on your own or choosing the food you'd like to it since you didn't eat the food served by the hotel.

She exists, well, she did exist. Not any more though. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amelia_Earhart

I've been eating well and will probably go for a steak tonight I think. Sound good?

That is one amazing room sir. Better than the heart break hotel I had for the wedding I travelled for hahahaha... obviously and by miles.

Smallest bottle 🤣🤣😂😂. I'm used to seeing these kind of bottles and they are always pricey here too.

You just gave me a get out of this country card with that invitation hahahaha. I would print it and secure my visa sir. Be ready to receive that call to validate 😂😂🤣🤣.

Sorry about the rain and the umbrella too... I know how boring it would be just being there alone but if anyone can get through any moment...that's you.

It's not a bad hotel actually. I have a balcony and spend most nights there reading, on Hive or the phone. The bed isn't the best, a little too hard for my liking but it's serviceable. I've slept on the ground a lot so I'm content to have a bed. The mini bottle of wine is still on the kitchen counter, I'll probably not drink it. They can give it to the next person.

Hopefully it's not pouring with rain when I return home and have to go collect my car from long-term parking. No umbrella would make for a wet walk. 😊

I love hotel with the balcony and a wonderful view too. Really refreshing.

Hahaha I'm coming, so I might help you take the drink hahaha.

I hope it's not going to rain so you won't have to get soaked with the rain. Sorry about the bed sir...I hope you get to enjoy wonderful night rest nonetheless.

We'll go halves on that wine then, one mouthful each, then trash the room and head down to Fish Lane and rock it!

Hahahaha I love the sound of that sir.

Lol, man hands XD.
Was that whiskey you were holding?

The first thirty minutes weren't all that smooth and there were a few shrieks of concern here and there, not mine, but overall it was fine.

LoL, it's the way you said it so casually for me. Weren't you at least a tinsy windy bit nervous during the "concern"?

I, for one, find I always panic during takeoffs and landings. Especially, if the wheels of the plane don't come out properly (yup, that happened once to me - story for another time)

Your business trip seems to be going well though. Good luck with your endeavors oracle. Oh and the room, it's got that G-doggy vibe to it. I say it's perfect for you!

World's largest hands huh? Not whisky, it's red wine, Shiraz. It's still sitting on the counter unopened. I'm not much of a drinker.

The turbulence a in-flight rarely bother me although, I spilled a drink because if them once. I've been in some really rough stuff and learned the knack of dealing with it. You just have to realise that if the plane goes down you're going to die. Once that acceptance is there the turbulence are no worries, just a minor inconvenience.

It's all going well here and yeah, the room is ok. I'm only here at night to sleep so it does the job.

I won't say the world's largest more like, severely above average. LoL, ever considered getting hand reduction surgery? :)

You just have to realise that if the plane goes down you're going to die.

Oh wow Galen, such great advice. I'll keep that in mind next time I fly. Thank you :)

I see, that's good to hear. Best of luck.

And so, the adventures of G-dog and his Underling begins.

Ignore that part.
