I was taken by surprise by a person who just dropped past; the doorbell went off and for some unknown reason (bonkersness I think) I answered it - I usually only answer the door if I know someone is coming over. Anyway, I answered it and who was there? Well, only the last person I expected to be there, that's who!
To say I was happy to see her would be an understatement and of course I invited her in.
We had a really great catch up, years in the making, and it seemed just like no time had gone by at all.
Of course, like most of those sort of catch ups it went for a while and we got hungry but as it was an unexpected drop-in I was left embarrassingly short of suitable supplies for the three of us to snack on - not one to give in easily though I went fridge digging and managed to put together this sneaky little platter to serve up and we enjoyed it very much...but not as much as the catching up part.
Platter: Grapes, blackberries, strawberries, blue cheese, Swiss, Gouda, Havarti and Cheddar cheese, hot sopressa salami, gypsy ham, nuts, assorted olives, beetroot and cashew nut dip and sweet potato and basil dip.
Have you ever been left short of options for food to offer guests who've just dropped in or have you ever dropped in on someone unexpectedly and they've not been able to offer you refreshments? Tell me about it in the comments.

I'm very impressed! There's absolutely nothing in my fridge I could offer to anyone other than perhaps some cheddar, apples and spinach. But nobody comes to my house expecting food. I've never had a guest yet who didn't bring his own:)
You have the best guests then, self sufficient ones. I like it!
I'm the guy who never turns up unannounced, I don't like putting people on the spot by simply dropping in, but on this occasion I didn't mind the person doing so and luckily I could scrape together some grub.
Oh you get a trophy for frige rummaging! It came together like you had it planned all along. I guess it pays to always have cheese, nuts and olives on hand and then you can fill in with others treasures as found.
I had to resort to using my stuff I take for lunches at work but it didn't come out too badly... although I always forget to leave room for the crackers so they end up in a bowl on the side.
Embarrassed at that feast platter??? Holy cow, that's better than my dinner platter the majority of the week!
I like the way you treat guests!
It was dinner time and I would have liked to serve up a proper dinner for the three of us, a BBQ or something, but could only rustle up this platter. I'm not saying it was a bad one (it was legit) but it would have been nice to do something more I think. My girl and the drop-in were not disappointed though.
I like to think I'm a good host though, made the coffees, the platter, more coffees (even found some cookies as well.)
You're clearly an excellent host. The platter speaks for itself... and it seems like the gentleman who prepared it has top-notch knowledge of plating and culinary presentations... or are you a very observant person, or have you been a chef?
I must say your wife and friends are incredibly lucky... From that platter, I'll stick with the cheeses and fruits... they look amazing!!!
I try to be a good host and because I'm 142 years old have had a lot of practice at it I guess. I've not been a chef or had any training in any way, I just learn as I go and do the best I can. On this occasion it came together quite well, especially considering it was sort of thrown together.
Where had I read about your 142 years before?...ahh right! It was recently, on your unbirthday...😅
I know you have the personality of a man who has lived a long time, many things...maybe that's equivalent to 142 years.
Have a great week, Galenkp.
Yeah for sure, 142 years is a long time. Think of all the changes I've seen: Invention of electricity, the automobile, penicillin, man's foray into space and so on.
WoW....is too mucho...😅😂
My apologies, I've had to be absent from my weekend commitments this weekend...luckily, next one is closer than we think.
🌻
I usually have a bit of everything at home, I learnt as a child to keep stock and if I have an unexpected visitor I suppose I would make a quick cake, I always have the ingredients and I bake those things very quickly.
I'm glad you had a good time and ate those delicacies I see! I'm not offended at all if you greet me with that food, it's spectacular!
Good night!
I like cake, I'm knocking on your door! 😬
Apple pie with almost no sugar!
That works!
😁
You had all of that in your fridge?! I feed only myself, mostly, and I couldn't put that much ready-to-eat food on a platter if I completely emptied my fridge of it. And it looks professionally plated! Dang...
Glad you had such a catch-up. What a lovely surprise for both of you.
Mostly we eat fresh food so there's always fruits and vegetables available and the cold cuts are part of what I take for lunch at work. In fact, my work lunch is a mini version of this platter usually, with some vegetables added. We tend to do one big shop a week (she caught us on the day prior) and then only top up as we need but there's often some "dregs" at the bottom of the barrel and the platter is made up of those.
It was a nice several hours spent catching up and we hope it'll not be as long until the next one, although the person lives a long way from us so it might be.
ok if I end up on the streets, I know whos door I'm knocking on 🤣 jk jk.
Even if this wasn't your best food you offer for guests, I think it's already above average! I think the bare minimum is to at least offer drinks if guests are over. Anything more is amazing haha.
Haha, no worries, and if I answer it and you're angry I'll throw some food on a platter so you don't starve!
If the catch up didn't go so long coffee and a couple cookies would have been it but we were all pretty hungry so I had to whip up something fast. It worked out though and used up some stuff that was laying around.
haha I don't think I'd be angry; I don't get angry that easily.
fair enough. I'd be hungry too if it was dinner time and the talk was very long. If nothing was at home, I'd prob propose to eat out haha. I'm glad you were able to work it out with what you had. Sometimes we just have to work with what we're given
On one occasion we were celebrating the International Women's Day activity.
It was the house of one of our co-workers and we had raised some money to buy food for those of us who were at the party.
When we were about to have lunch 4 people arrived who were not contemplated. We men looked at each other and had to put up more money and buy the meat to make more food, but, it needed to be done.
Happy Sunday and a better week.
Cheers and best regards.
I like to be a good host and make sure people leave happier (and fuller) than they arrived. I think it's the minimum. My take on it is, if I'm willing to let a person into my house then they deserve to be treated kindly and with respect which means feeding them. It seems you have the same thought.
That's right.
The people who come to my house have to leave pleased and it is up to me as the host to make sure that this is fulfilled.
Happy week.
Cheers and best regards.
Thank you, I hope your week is productive and enjoyable.
My wife would be the one to handle all of that probably. We usually have something tucked away in the freezer that we can throw together in a pinch. This looks delicious. The salami and olives in particular!
My guest should count herself lucky she didn't end up with a bowl full of granola and a lump of cheese! Normally we'd have more but it was a day prior to doing our main shop so the situation was critical as as far as options went.
I totally understand that. If anyone shows up to my house on a Wednesday evening they will probably find the fridge and cupboards quite bare!
Lol, just the crumbs. (Not that you'd leave crumbs, but you know what I mean).
For sure!
These look like a masterpiece of an appetizer.
I always have a package of frozen puff pastry, scones, hot dog rolls, pie with cheese or cherries in the fridge. And when they call me at least half an hour before, I have a shop nearby where I can buy several types of cheese and meat products, so the service can look similar to this "little plater" of yours.
We eat mostly fresh food so tend not to have anything suitable in the freezer. Serving up ice cubes isn't probably going to go so well. 🥴
We have a really amazing gourmet supermarket close by so we could have gone there but I figured I'd see what I could find first. It all worked out.
Good morning @galenkp.... I'll just tell you that when I have nothing in the fridge when an unexpected visitor arrives, it means that I have nothing 😅
Best regards.
Yeah, but I bet you offer them some interesting conversation though. That's something.
Very good morning; maybe it is as you say, I am not very clear. 😂
See you in a while 😴
It's awkward when someone arrives unexpectedly and you don't have something special to offer them. Especially when it's someone you like to make feel good. Although in reality when we've been without a friend for a long time just being able to chat and catch up also feeds us in a way.
Last December a great friend I hadn't seen in a while (he lives in Australia by the way) showed up at my work. We ended up going to a restaurant for lunch and a chat.
If one day I show up at your house unexpectedly don't worry if you only have what's on the plate in the picture to offer me 😉😀😀 Everything looks delicious. 🤤
I agree, just the catch up was good and the person had no expectations on anything other than that but I like to feel like I've made a person welcome and comfortable; if I allow them into my house it means I want them there and will do my best to keep them happy.
That speaks for how good a host you are. I already kind of knew that, as I feel taken care of when I visit your virtual home on Hive. 👍
I do my best, sometimes it's enough and sometimes not I suppose.
Is very delicious!
Indeed.
