Well hello, stranger
What is better than a weekend? An early Saturday morning with beer and to top that off, a birthday weekend with locally brewed beer π».
This post has been in my drafts for ages... I don't know why I forgot about it, but hey I did! It's a short birthday post that I wrote in November last year. See my birthday is in the same week as both my parents and while they did make my birthday special when I was a kid, it's not as fun anymore as an adult... Honestly, I can't believe I'm an adult π€£, I'm 24 (which I realised again this Saturday) and I still feel 20. Perhaps I feel this way since I'm still studying and working on the side. I don't know, it just feels a bit strange to think people view me as an adult. I see the change in my behaviour and responsibility since I was 20, but my spirit is still running around somewhere in a cornfield. πΎ
Enough of that! Let's get to the post that I forgot existed!
Birthdays! Something I love and hate at the same time. Love it, since it's a day I get to reflect on everything that happened during the past year of my life, I get to appreciate everything I achieved, my family and friends, the hot spring air and just being alive! But I also hate it, for it makes me wonder what more I could have done, whether am I on track to my goals, did I make myself proud, can I do better? And I absolutely hate when people call or text me the entire day! Especially people that don't have any value in your life and just text you "HBAY!"... Like thanks random person I knew in high school...
This year was also a bit sad since it's the first birthday since my grandmother passed. She used to call right when I woke up and this year that call never came. I did miss her this year... A LOT!
Well, my dad had his birthday a few days before me during the week and he decided to take leave the Saturday, on my birthday so we could do something. My dad loves beer, he makes his own and everything. We decided to visit a brewery in Bloemfontein, which happens to also be one of his friends' breweries, so we do get special treatment and tastings π. He even had a beer on tap here a few times!
So let us dive into our fun BIRTHDAY WEEKEND EXPERIENCE! πππ»
We visited Famous Brew and Still, or as we call it Brew Still. The place started out in a small space at the guy's house a few years back and he made his way up the ladder to owning a brewing business and now the brewery and restaurant. He hosts parties, weddings and people like us who want to chill on a Saturday.
Happy 24 Birthday to me! Do I feel 24? Nope. Do I look 24? Well also apparently not since I got ID checked when I ordered π. Take note that the legal drinking age in South Africa is 18 π€£. (@technicalside pointed out that I looked red and tired in the photo, so I just had to inform everyone that I'm not drunk, it was just 36Β°C (97Β°F) outside π€£π©).
This brewery doesn't only cater to beer lovers! They have on tap speciality rum, vodka and gin. And all of these are locally brewed, either by the guy himself/ his brewery or his friends. The brewing club has competitions every now and then and he will sell the winners' creations as a special brew for a week or so. I absolutely love the cranberry vodka, although I'm allergic to cranberries, so I tend not to order it. As for the gin... It's great but I hate gin π .
Here you can see a few of the beers they had. They have plenty of options, Ale, Blond, Stout, Pilsner, Porter, Lager, Weisse... The list goes on. My dad prefers a Stout and Lager and anything beyond normal bitterness. I on the other hand enjoyed a Blond, Weisse, Lager and sometimes Ale.
You can clearly see that one of us can handle more than the other... As much as I love beer, I tend to only enjoy one. The bitterness is perfect the first time around, but if it's more than 300ml I tend not to finish it. I can't exactly remember what I had, but I do believe it was an Ale. Here you can see it was a dark beer. It has a sweet bread taste that turned bitter at the back of your mouth, with a hint of orange. My dad said it had a hint of banana... I didn't taste banana π
I do believe that homebrew or speciality brew is way nicer than store-bought beer. I grew up with my dad making his own beer, so I have a different appreciation and "connection" to it. Despite that being said, I'll always settle for Heineken if places don't have a special brew.
Aa, I need this for my house one day... For the people who know me (including some from the hive), I love food. Food is always an option, food makes one smile, and food is the motivation one needs to get things done. Food is one of the best things in life. So Yes, I did get food as well π€£.
I few things around
The location used to be an art gallery, so there are still a few things around that get one's attention.
I want to believe that this is still the original paint job on the car, but seeing as it's old and stands outside, It has probably been painted over once or twice. It's a random piece on the property, just chilling under one of the trees.
This door is so heavy, I get why they never close it. I think it would have been even better if the small gears went all the way around, but hey, maybe there was a reason behind only adding them to one quarter. Maybe the artist couldn't find more π€£.
Thank you for joining me on this long-forgotten post. I just realised that November is once again around the corner. I guess time does indeed fly! I'll need another beer to recover from that.
