Week 253 A Lethal Pair: Greed and Selfishness

in Weekend Experiences14 days ago

Happy weekend to all the hivers, today is one of those weeks that I am enthusiastic about several topics, select the one that deals with greed and selfishness, because these are difficult times we are living in Cuba and the shortages encourage human miseries.

I will begin by telling you that Cubans have always distinguished ourselves for our joy and fraternity, no matter if you know each other or not, if you need help you always have a helping hand.

Many have been the difficulties we have overcome because of that spirit of solidarity and human sensitivity.

But since the pandemics the panorama has changed by more than 50% and I am being cautious in the estimate, the economic measures taken have had a very negative impact, triggering high inflation rates and decrease in all spheres of life.

The scarcity of resources is such that people in their struggle for survival confront each other, so that individual interests take precedence, they try to hoard for tomorrow without caring that today there are entire families that are left with nothing..

When I am in a line for food or medicine and I see the sales clerks and the people in charge of the store engage in scams and hide products and then sell them at exorbitant prices, thus profiting from the needs of others, it leaves a lot to be desired.

It affects me very much to see these actions and I have suffered not reaching the medicines that correspond to me in pharmacy and having to buy them more expensive to those same dependents.

Selfishness and hoarding has permeated from the highest layers of society to the lowest, who are trying to survive.

There is no trust in the officials, as they are part of this situation, since they take advantage of their positions and power to accumulate wealth regardless of the cost.

And unfortunately we find ourselves with a minister of economy who demands austerity and is dismissed for taking money out of the country.

In the workplace you also see how some people want to appropriate the work of others to obtain merits or put obstacles and hinder their development to avoid competition or, as they say popularly, so that they do not overshadow them.

This causes interpersonal relationships to deteriorate, because everyone sees the mean attitude of the other, causing isolation and emotional emptiness, because they become inhuman and insensitive.

Our children and youth are growing up seeing these attitudes and the family encourages them to be selfish and do not share with their peers or snack because it cost them much conseguilrla, the same happens with the prohibitions lend him a book or explain some task.

Of course, we still have remnants of goodness, which we have to rescue, from the individual point of view, try to do good deeds and encourage those around us to do the same.

We have shown that we are capable of uniting and doing very solidary actions when there have been natural phenomena.

So we have to encourage these practices and educate so that empathy and solidarity prevail in our daily actions.

It is a responsibility of all of us not to lose these values that have always identified us, we must practice good deeds in our daily lives and thus we can enroll all those around us.

It is fair to point out that greed and selfishness are also manifested globally, large companies suffocate smaller ones, countries of greater development and economic power impose their rules by force generating wars and genocide, today we have plenty of examples, of course the worst part is always borne by the people,

Much can be debated on this subject, I limit myself to outline my reality today.

A powerful and moving reflection on the harsh reality faced in Cuba. Your words capture the emotional and societal toll of greed and selfishness, especially during tough times. It's heartbreaking, yet important to acknowledge how empathy and solidarity can still shine through. Thank you for sharing this deeply human perspective.

It's really sad that desperate people behave this way. It'd surely better to work together and help each other out, but I guess people prioritize money and the self over others 😭😭😭

Greed is like a bottomless pit, what you have is never enough.
