What would you like to START, STOP and KEEP in your life this year? Explain.
Ah, I actually like this prompt a lot!
It's actually not the first time I am seeing this "start/stop/keep" idea, because I recall seeing them in either feedback and survey forms or work related settings. Interestingly, it didn't occur to me that this could be applicable to life as well! So I thought I needed to take up some self reflection exercise, which in a way, is a more meaningful reflection than just coming up with new year resolutions (something that I am not so keen on).
START - Exercising More
I recently wrote a post about my personal health, and I mentioned that I wanted to put my health first. Or at least try and nudge myself to do so, even with all the various commitments and busy schedules that I have.
The reason behind this thought was really about wanting to age more healthily, and hopefully delay some of the illnesses or health problems (even though they will eventually come anyway).
So far, over the past few weeks, I have visited the gym more often and have been more active. It's not easy to squeeze out more time but fortunately there were the Chinese New Year holidays and I took some leave away from work as well, so I made it happen. Let's hope I can keep up with the momentum.
STOP - Being Too Thrifty
I wanted to say sugary drinks and oily food, but maybe it's better to move on from the topic of health to something different. At the risk of sounding controversial, I want to stop being too thrifty this year, or rather, from this year onwards. I know this might sound wrong to some people, but hear me out first.
I was raised to be very thrifty and careful with my finances, and while this has been generally been a good trait and has helped me accumulated some savings, I also gradually realised that it's not always the best approach to save on every single thing.
In other words, it's somewhat a balance between being prudent and also being generous, especially to oneself and people around you (if you can afford to). Some areas would be stuff that are health/medical related, i.e. if getting a comprehensive check is necessary, I don't think one should save on that. Another area would be gifts and treats for loved ones, i.e. if my parents want to dine at a slightly expensive restaurant, I would be perfectly ok with it because it's a special occasion and it's just not so nice to tell them to go for a cheaper place because the food at the restaurant is expensive. And of course, there are many more scenarios too.
I think mentally I kind of started to make this switch last year, and I thought this would be the way forward. Financially, this definitely means my expenses will go up, but I believe as long as the money is well spent and it's within my affordability, it should be okay.
KEEP - Having A Positive Mindset
I am not sure if people around me, or even people on Hive, would know me as someone with a positive mindset. But I am actually quite an optimistic person.
Well, it doesn't mean I don't have pessimistic moments or days when I feel down, but on the whole, I do have a good level of contentment in my life and I feel that that has led me to have a positive outlook and mindset in life.
I definitely wasn't like that all this while, but I was influenced by a friend, who shared with me about the laws of attraction. Essentially this means when you always have positive thoughts, you tend to attract more positive experiences in life. Back then, I was a little skeptical (who wouldn't, right?) but I thought why not give it a shot? Another factor which influenced me was also age, or perhaps, maturity. As I grew older, I just feel that life is too short, and we should make the best out of what we have during our time here. And I think this had worked out well!
Alright, ending off a photo of my meal this weekend, and I chose this photo because it relates to all 3 things that I mentioned! One, the food is quite healthy (look at the rice!). Two, it's slightly expensive (it's ok to pamper oneself sometimes!). Three, it has my favourite drink - matcha, and that makes me happy. Haha.
