For Christmas from my wife, I got a "date night" where Smallsteps is spending the evening at her aunt's place, and we went out for a meal. As normal, since we don't go out that often, we tried somewhere we haven't been before and perhaps as usual also, we were both disappointed. I have said the last few times that I don't really enjoy going out to dinner anymore, but she keeps persisting. It is not going out with her I don't enjoy, it is the poor service, and the terrible value for what is generally a "nothing special" meal. We paid for "the view" at tonight's place, but really, the view isn't much to write home about from anywhere in this town.
My wife was trying to order a "little light choking".
The restaurant décor was nice enough, but the service was almost non-existent. I won't go into it in any detail, but when the guy couldn't be bothered to bring us the wine list, I didn't have high hopes. And then when "dessert" came, it was 14€ for a half mouthful. And this place wasn't anything fancy.
I had a burger. 25€ - just the burger.
It annoys me.
So, view or no view, this is a no-go* on my list for the future. And hopefully, that future will not be going out to any restaurants on a date night, because it is just a waste on me these days. I would rather do something else.
Like darts!
While I don't actually play darts, I am okay at throwing things, so this was a bit of fun. Neither my wife nor I know the rules, but this new place had some electronic boards with interactive screens that had several different kinds of games we could play, without actually having to know anything, other than in which direction to throw the dart.
A couple years ago, my wife and I went to play pool together and after about ten minutes, she said "play properly" as she is competitive, and then got mad because she couldn't win. This went better than that, because she won a few rounds of darts, because unlike when professionals play., when we play, the outcomes have a lot of "random variation" in them - because we both suck at it. Though towards the end, we were also both much improved, but not that much.
For people who like to throw things, this I can recommend.
Unfortunately, after dinner my wife started to feel ill and then by the time we got home, she was quite sick with a reaction to the food. Not the restaurant's fault in this case, though I feel they should take some of the blame anyway. Still, it put a dampener on the night and as the psychology goes, a good event should end on a high note. Not to be tonight though, we just watched a random TV show.
And my wife went to bed.
And that is the night over.

J doesn't like going out to eat either but it's mostly because he's a grumpy old fart and a massive tightarse more than anything else.
Meanwhile I guess I have much lower standards and very little idea.
How's your wife now, recovered from the ordeal?
J sounds like me...The grumpy part not the old part.
Ok, fuck it, the old part too.
Bahahahahahahahahahaaa XD
I reckon you two would get on great (or maybe you'd hate each other, not sure how much of a between there would be), now if only I could make him post (he does have an account on here, I think he maybe posted twice and then dropped off).
If I hated him, I'd take him hunting and...only one of us would come back...however it's unlikely. He seems like a reasonable dude. I didn't know he had an account here although I guess many people do that I don't know. My other brother had an account here too, used to post a bit, but has dropped off. He was anonymous though.
Not fully recovered yet.
I am with J, a bit of a tight arse over some things, and definitely grumpy. If paying, I want to get something for it. I am not picky most of the time, but I feel that these days, they aren't even trying to provide good service.
Ergh that sucks.
Service is almost non-existent everywhere these days. A pity they weren't real darts, one of those in the back would have gotten the waiter's attention pretty quickly.
We don't go to restaurants much, far too much assfuckery as per your story above, and a yiros or fish and chips at the beach with the sun going down is better anyway. I don't know what businesses think is going to happen but not providing service will eventually push most people away.
(Looks like my auto didn't fire.)
They were real darts, but that was at a different place, and weirdly, the service was better at the dart place.
Getting out of the house this time of year sucks here. Then paying for shot service double sucks.
Autos are having issues it seems. Most of what I do is manual anyway.
Real darts? Well then...I'm pretty sure I know how to cure shit service. Once darts start landing in backs people tend to move faster, or so I'm led to believe.
Like I said, going out here is hit and miss too, and I'm pretty intolerant of shit service. (No surprises there.)
Something tells me your wife picked the place. I recall you complaining about a bad dining experience in Tampere before.
Was her intention to go for a fine dining experience? If so, I suggest it would be worthwhile to do some research beforehand. It would be a great idea regardless of the plan.
She isn't much of a restaurant picker, it seems. I believe the risk of a disappointing experience is higher than usual in a place like Periscope. People come for "the view" and get ripped off. Note that I have never been to the place so I can't really know if it's actually a bad place. Just saying the risk is greater in a place like that.
If the view was something you really cared about, Näsinneula would've been a better choice. About 140 m above ground level, the view is unsurpassed by anything within >100 km radius. And it's widely considered to be a pretty good restaurant.
Consider Ravinteli Huber:
https://www.ravintelihuber.fi/en/
The website looks promising for meat lover. It's a little bit on the expensive side but not too much. Come to think of it, it's actually quite reasonable. A cheese burger for €12, probably a small one as it's listed among things like portobello and pistachios (€12), Huber's sausage and mustard (€4), grilled bone marrow (€5).
Huber is one of the disappointing experiences, and we have given it a shot twice, years apart. For a place that specialises in meat, the steak was lacking. The best Steak in town is probably at Tampella.
Näsinneula is out of price range for a random dinner.
There are a couple decent places around here these days, but if looking for something we haven't tried before, it is always touch and go. Periscope has got both good and bad reviews from friends, but friends aren't a very good judge, because it always comes down to experience. I think the thing that made it as bad as it was, was the lack of service, not the food itself.
I see. I guess trial and error is the only way to know. What other restaurants have you tried?
Hope she gets better today.
I agree with you about dining out. I rather enjoy going to the movies, visiting an expo or just get lost in areas of the city we have not been before.
With all the regulatory requirements and costs, managing a restaurant is not easy and it is almost impossible to find any with a good quality/price ratio.
Doing stuff is far better. Even sitting in a bar playing cards with a glass of wine would be enough for me. The meals just aren't worth it anymore.
Expensive burger. For $25, my wife and son and I order several portions of salmon rolls, tom yum soup and drinks at the Marumi restaurant. But now it’s better to spend this money wisely, and cook something tasty and inexpensive at home.
Prices here for everything is crazy these days, even at the supermarkets. I don't value the restaurant "experience" anymore, as the experience is disappointing, even at half the price.
I don't prefer eating out, partucilarly in a restaurant for a fews years if I am not obliged because it has kinda been turned into robbing rather than meal and service.
Robbery is what it is. Instead of decor, they should hire staff that give a crap.
When we had a dartboard in the flat where we lived before moving to the house I missed the dartboard many times. So the wardrobe next to dartboard really suffered.
Lol. Sounds like my level of darts!
A good date night for me is dirty street tacos! Normal restaurants can get stuffed!
This sounds brilliant!
That's a bummer, and what a waste of a date night. The view certainly looks like a winner and the darts looks fun. Is this more of a sports bar type of restaurant rather than a date night one?
I'm sure there must be nice restaurants for night out, you just haven't found them yet. Please give up yet, it's important to spend quality time together with Mrs TK every now and then. Hope your next date will be more successful.
Nah, restaurant was a proper place. Darts was across town at a weird little bar.
Maybe we should save the nicer restaurants when with friends, so then it is a night out with extra value, as they are rare too.
How was the start of your weekend?
I'm losing count of the days already, took me a minute to remember we've just finished Friday, going into Saturday 😅. Weekend should be a tad quieter. Had family gatherings on 24, 26 and 27, and when I say family gatherings I mean between around 20 people each today!! Except on Christmas day it was just the 5 of us. Time to start winding down over the weekend to recover!!
It's fucken Saturday? Lol.
Yep, don't blink too many times, otherwise it will be 2027!!!
Fug it, just blinked three times. Checked though, and it's still 2024. Phew.
No more blinking till Wednesday!!
Spending time at home can be both better quality and more economical than spending time outside. Of course, sometimes you need to go out. For the sake of being different. Sometimes the food outside affects me too. I can't say that I prefer eating outside.
I am normally happy with basic food and good company. Or doing something. Restaurants aren't exciting me much these days.
