I like the splash image for this article today. It is quite simple, but also somehow dramatic and, it could symbolize many things. I took it today as we walked around a patch of forest in the city (yes, that is possible in Finland) before going and doing a little bit of shopping. Mostly things we needed - like a trip to the pharmacy, which seems to be where a lot of our money goes these days.
Perhaps the leaf represents illness.
Today though, there wasn't too much talk about health and instead we just wandered around through the forest paths enjoying the weather. It now feels like "proper" autumn finally, and we were more rugged up than we have been recently. Gloves and all.

But, there are still some signs of late summer around, with blueberries still to be found, and even the odd raspberry also. We ate some blueberries to work up an appetite to have cinnamon donuts at the top of the hill. However, when we got there, the line was very long (like usual) but thankfully we read the sign that they were out of the gluten-free option, so we walked away. They are my favorite, but I can't eat them if my wife and daughter can't have one too.
Smallsteps wasn't happy.
We all have to learn how to live with disappointment though. However, on this day, we decided to go to a café that we knew will have something she can eat instead. As well as it gave a chance for her to play more in the park. I don't remember my parents making these kinds of concessions for me when I was a kid, but I also don't consider them as great parents.
I don't really know what "great parents" might be, though I know what they aren't and, I know that I am far from it. But I am less far than my parents were. I guess that is a generational improvement. Incremental for sure, but at least I think it is heading in the right direction.
Perhaps I am learning something after all.

I hope a sign of good parenting is you think you are not doing as good a job as you could. Going that extra mile for your kids is a noble thing but I find I have to keep it in check. I find if I do it too much, and do a really good job helping out and supporting, it gets taken for granted, and there is no appreciation for the effort which is almost acceptable. Unfortunately, when they even hint that they are entitled to be treated better than they are, I have no time for that shit at all. Not the best reaction for a problem I have probably my created myself.
I am trying to let them fail for themself, then resist the temptation to swoop in and solve their disappointment. They just will have to marinate in that feeling in order to have a chance at the wisdom we have developed by stewing in our own consequences.
I don't believe in the statement that you are a better dad than your parents were to you, I rather infer that you have gradually adapted to modernity which is not comparable to 40 years ago.
There is no manual for being a dad or a mum. There is a Caribbean saying that goes ‘on the way you straighten the burdens’, referring to the fact that in life we adapt to new times.
I suppose it is very complicated to be parents and to do it ‘not so well’ is often not on purpose, but because of deficiencies and repercussions of what has been obtained or lived for many years. Not everyone is awake enough to realise this and not repeat patterns.
The pictures are so beautiful. 😍
I wish you would not need to go to the pharmacy so often.
Getting your kids out into nature and spending time with them is so vital. I see so many parents not wanting to parent now a days. They over book their kids to not hav eto deal with them and then they get caught up in a routine that just needs to be taken back to the basics.
Why do a lot of your money in pharmacy? The goverment don't cover them? At least to the some extend?
Here, we pay little for the medicines; however, the goverment don't cover all, such as vitamins.
We finally got some fall weather today too. I think we have turned the corner towards more average temperatures. We also got some rain which has been very scarce lately.
It's great when you have bushwalks RIGHT THERE :)
one of many reasons I don't think I could ever do inner city and why 15min cities is unlikely to be a viable option for me
Pity about the doughnuts but glad you were able to find something else comparable.
I have come to the conclusion that it doesn't matter if you're not a great parent as long as you're genuinely doing your very bestest and your children think you are.
oldest has told me he is happy with how things were done and is happy now, middle child I'm not sure what she really thinks but I often joke that she would absolutely say otherwise if people mentioned she had good parents, and youngest has told me that we're the best parents ever and I'm not allowed to say otherwise XD
