Ok so today was the start of an era as I took my daughter on her very first driving lesson!
She managed to fail her learners license the first time so 2 weeks later we went back and she PASSED! Hallelujah. I can stand going to that place. The cues, the inept administration, the cues. I’m so glad we don’t have to go back for a good few months.
Anyway I was quite surprised when she didn’t immediately ask me to teach her to drive! I think with the relief of passing she just needed a break. I did too.
So Thursday I offered to take her driving on Friday in the carpark near our home. She made all her plans around this time to make sure she could have a go in the car and boy oh boy was she keen.
I drove us to the carpark already explaining clutch control - all our cars are manual or stick shift, not many automatics out here so she has to pass her drivers license with a manual. Clutch control is probably the hardest part so we started there.
She got into the drivers seat and I started explaining the order of operation of starting the car. And what do you know, she kept reaching for the hand break before the car was even in gear!!! If you roll even slightly you fail in our drivers test, so that’s a fail. I’m not looking forward to teaching hill-starts.
She actually didn’t do too badly for a first time ever in the driver’s seat. Only a couple stalls and the rest of the time I had her driving circles in the lot. Then figure 8’s... all in first gear. Ha ha ha. I also started teaching her observation for turning... look left, indicate left, look again before you turn. Look right, indicate right, look again before you turn.
Our main focus was to pull off using her clutch control and then stopping without stalling. Half circle around the lot, stop, go, half circle, stop and switch off, start car, go, etc. I think we will be doing this for a looooong time.
Here’s a little video of a minute of your life that you’ll never get back:
Hee heee heeeee....
I need a shoulder massage so badly right now.

Aaah thank you!!! Hope you watched the last video 😜
Sure did and that was half the reason for the curation! Good stuff! @zo3d😂
Haha! The look on your face in the first photo and the final frame in the last video!!! 😂🤣😀
Congratulations on your daughter's right of passage and welcome to the new gray hairs that appeared on your head overnight @zo3d
Absolutely!! Definitely going to be a grey hair journey! My shoulders are still stiff though 🤪
Bwahaha! That picture of you in the main image! That alone is worthy of my 100% vote - The @curangel promotion I gave it was for the rest of the post, like, the whole thing minus you in that first image.
I'll be honest, some of my 100% vote was for your saffer accent.
Thanks for using THE WEEKEND community.
Taylor you crazy gal, DON'T HIT THE CAR!
Ha ha ha! Thanks for that! Had to make someone laugh today so I’ve succeeded! 🤣
I got a laugh for sure...And the accent. Lovely. Reminds me of someone I know.
Haha this made me laugh! I still remember learning to drive and feeling exhausted after 30 minutes, but it looks like not only your daughter had some stress haha
Gosh! It’s been so long since I learnt to drive. I was exactly her age. But I think I was quite confident. She’s done well for her first go!
It would be lot easier mom if she wasn't driving on the wrong side of the car.
Ha ha! If only. If she gets her wish and is allowed to travel the States in January then that will become true! She first has to get her drivers license on this side of the pond. Know anyone that needs an au pair???
She's going state side in January? Why, where? Do tell. Just so happens your virtual friend is pretty familiar with the joint.
She’s planning to au pair through an agency but is hoping to be based in Boston for a year. One of the criteria is having a drivers licence hence the lessons. In SA you can only get your license at 18 yo so she has to wait til November to do the test. But for some reason she’s dead set on BOSTON!! Hi t might give me a reason to have to visit that part of the world though so I’m not complaining 😀
Hmm.. well. I've traveled to at least 40 of these 50 states and lived in about 10. My mother taught me not to say anything at all if I don't have anything nice to say so I won't comment on Boston.
😂 I have no idea why she’s so obsessed. She has a Dutch passport and could go anywhere in Europe too. But anyway... parents know nothing when they have teenagers.
Gosh, you almost scared the life out of me shouting Thela don't hit the car lol
That is if I got her name right lol.
Ha ha ha!!! So glad I can entertain you. Her name is Taylor but that’s close enough 😜
Oh ooops. I guess I didn't get the pronunciation well.
